Why do people really Pay Compliments?

Do you pay Compliments to people because (a) you mean it (b) you are just trying to be kind and make them feel happy (c) you are softening them up, because you need something?

Because people are usually fishing for a compliment too ! I like something Mark Twain said " Compliments embarass me because I feel like the person does not say enough ! "

I pay compliments when I see something I like. It makes me feel good to make other people feel good. My mother always said, "you get more with honey then you do with vinegar." She also said, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything." Also if I'm going to give criticism, I also like to pay genuine compliments. So yes, I pay compliments because I mean them, they make people feel good, and they soften people. There is nothing sinister in a genuine compliment.
