   How do you know?
   
   How do you know if you are really good at something if nobody tells you?  Or is that simply the answer?

   Ego. If you spend your life waiting for other people to tell you that you're good or bad, you'll always live in self doubt. If you KNOW you're good, you can just ignore your detractors and go do what you're good at!

   Oh boy....How can I say this the way I would like it understood?.......I'll just say it and YOU take it anyway you choose........
   That intro should give you a hint at what I'm about to tell you. Kierstin.   YOU are really good at something if it is something you love to do and get much enjoyment doing.  You are good at it if YOU are satisfied with the outcome/results and realize it has value.  YOU are good at something if it works out for you more often than not and you feel victorious and grateful
   No......lack of comment, praise or kudos is NOT the simple answer, as you ask in your question.   Nor, by the way, can you believe you are "good at something" based upon positive feedback and continual praise.
   It's all relative.....taking into consideration we are dealing with sane individuals......(eg. Charles Manson thought he was good at preaching and caring for his followers....some of them may have thought so too....but due to the insanity involved here, all opinions are moot! Period)
   This is true:  If you keep doing what you love and YOU believe you are GOOD at it......in time, you will see that your own belief in yourself, spreads to all around you.  I promise.

   it feels good to have positive feedback...but people are prone to telling others things they believe they wish to hear and so you cannot trust praise...sometimes praise is given to make someone happy not because it is true.  the only one who can tell you if you are good at something is yourself, and then only if you can be honest with yourself. an example. i am a natural leader. i know what makes a good leader. i strive to be the best i can be, and that means putting the needs of others before my own. i KNOW i am a good leader. yes people tell me i am, but i KNOW it because i am happy with the way i treat others and that i can be trusted on and relied upon to do what is right no matter what. i dont NEED anyone to tell me i am one. to know you are good at something you first need to know what makes someone good at the thing you are dealing with. then if you meet or exceed these requirements, and you KNOW it...then it is all that matters.

   Your validation should come from the inside and not from other folks opinions. No matter what you do or who you are there will be people who will dislike you and your efforts. Sometimes the most "popular" thing is not the best thing. Does McDonalds really make (the best hamburger) in the world? According to popularity the answer would appear to be (yes). And yet I personally know of no one who claims that is the case. :-)
   The next time you go into a Best Buy or other retail outlet which sells CDs and DVDs make note of the artists you (never) heard of or seenl Look at the various Billboard top 100 charts by genre. You will see there are people who are very successful that (you) may not personally like or feel they have (no talent).
   If you work hard enough and get your efforts out in front of enough people you are bound to find an audience/customers. With 7 Billion people walking the planet odds are there are several who would value your work. Believe in yourself and persist!

   You just know.  You don't need anyone else to tell you.
   Sure, it feels nice to receive a compliment or praise, appreciation, admiration, or any other positive attention for what and how you are doing...
   But that's just their opinion
   
   The only way you really know you're good is how it makes you feel when nobody else is around to tell you what they think.
   Are you proud of yourself?
   Does it make you feel good inside?  Does it make you feel accomplished?
   
   When you're good at something you have confidence, even if others criticize - it doesn't change a thing because you already know within that you're good at it.
