Why do some believe in hell?
I just saw the question of the opposite asked. Uinversal reconciliation is God's plan for all, yet the hell wishers would drag new believers in to the ditch that blinds them from the love of our Father.
I believe in Hell because I've been there. It's also known as Newark, New Jersey.
Perhaps people believe in Hell or destruction because of the number of Bible verses that completely oppose universalism.
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.
Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’”
His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
"41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;
42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
"But the fearful, and unbelieving ... shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone."
" And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the LAKE OF FIRE."
"Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
For I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
Then shall they also answer him, saying Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.
And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal."
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
People don't wish for Hell. It isn't pleasant, it isn't something we want to discuss, it isn't our idea of ideal, but it comes down to this, we don't teach what we want to believe, we teach the truth. The truth is not everybody is going to see the kingdom of God, which is why we evangelize, to say otherwise is to contradict Jesus. I don't know if Hell is a place, or a concept, or non existent. What I do know is that Universalism is contra Biblical
Is that all you have, there are over 600 verse in scripture that support the Gospel of universal reconciliation.
I have more but I have limited space. How do you discount these verses? Especially verses that contain apoleias? Used in verses such as Phil 1:28
Thats simple. Who opposed them? Jews! And they were destroyed when God gathered them all back in Jerusalem for the feast of tabenackle AD70. Christ said in Luke11:51 that this would happen during their generation.
That does not work for all of the verses. Read them within context and you will find that not all references to Gehenna were references to this event.
reading anything in scripture in context is the worst thing you can do when there is a spiritual message behind it. Only a literalist does such things.
Just to clarify, you don't mean fire and brimstone right? Because everybody knows that that version of the realm was created as a conversion tactic in the middle ages. The original version was meeting God to be judged, then being torn from his presence from eternity if you weren't holy enough. Apparently, once you had felt his presence it was unbearable to be without it.
Either way, those that do believe in the Christian stories have my respect, whether our views differ or not. Granted, it can get a bit painful talking to a strong believer, but what is coming across isn't ignorance, it's love and faith in their deity. With all the scrutiny and evidence against Christianity over the past few years, I respect the unfaltering faith.

I'm sitting here studying my Bible and the Lord gave me a revelation of hell.A few days ago I watched a documentary on volcanoes. I only watched a few minutes of it, no detailed information. As I was praying and asking God what He wanted to show me in the Word today, I believe he led me to...

What causes so many traditional and/or fundamental religionists to believe that the overwhelmingmajority of humankind will be among those damned to some sort of Hell?

For as long as religion existed, there has always been the threat of torture in the afterlife (unless you subscribe to *insert religion here* and convert today!), but when you actually think about it and apply a single brain cell to the idea, it doesn't make any kind of sense at all. Given that I...

Every Christian believes that their sins are forgiven by the blessed name and blood of Jesus on the Cross. The concept that Jesus (PBUH) died for the SINS of Mankind (Original Sin/Blood Atonement) runs contrary to not only rational thinking and common sense, but more importantly, to the teachings...
