Can anyone supply some practical tips on being inwardly happy?
"Inward happiness" has to do with who you are, inside your soul, when you have just woken up in the morning and stare into the mirror and say: "I like you. You're not perfect and you have your flaws, but you have a good heart and a sound mind, and you try to make a difference when you step out the door"
Then you try to take that "inward happiness" like a football that you won't fumble throughout the day. A couple times your benevolent smile got jostled. Once somebody really got you with an insult. Once, you got ignored. Once somebody asked you: "Why are you so happy?".
You tried to carry that football. People tried to make you fumble all day long. Or, was it just the world trying to disrupt that inner happiness. It was neither. It was you realizing how much a challenge it is just to keep a hold of that ball; when no one was really trying to get AT you.
The next morning you rise, and you add one more thing to your list. "Its true that people really dont care that deeply about you, unless its your loved ones, but maybe that's good. You have a life long day to day project, and it is your sacred duty to be inwardly happy!
When it comes to God, do not push yourself into rules that you spiritually are not ready for. Pray about the issues that concern you, give them to God and then don't force yourself to walk the narrow line, keep your eyes on God and let Him do the work through you. Its not by our might but by His spirit. As God sees and hears the sincerity of your hearts plea to change, He will make it happen and the christian will then by the power of God, walk in His ways.
Two extremely owerful answers here. Let us pray for one another, guys. Much love.
I can only relate how I found inward happiness. It is working for me, so maybe it could help someone else as well. I had to look within myself and conduct a very honest, thorough and brutal search for moral failure. For me, this was the root of my discontent with life. The problem was not around, but in me. I actually wrote down what I found out about myself. Then I shared it with God and another person I trusted. I shared all of it. When I did this, the sense of freedom was nearly overwhelming. But something I already mentioned needs to be kept in mind. It is an honest, thorough and brutal look within. This works for me.
Yes, my Brother.
'brutal'? In a sense perhaps, but why not loving? Still wonderful answer.
Brutal=leaving no stone unturned. It's easy for me to excuse wrong thinking/behavior. One sign that I'm onto something is when I am afraid to look closely. Likely something is under that stone. Fearlessly searching may be a better term.
All the answers bar one, was extremely beautiful. I really appreciated this input. Peace.

If you can, break down these bold letters, and make the grammer easier to follow. This will help me to enjoy the contribution. Thanks.
There is a saying for married couples that I like: "You cannot fix what's wrong inside your house by going outside of your home". I think this could also apply for internal joy. The first thing to do is look inside yourself and find those things that are making you unhappy. Once you find those things, examine why you are unhappy with these things in your life. Then seek the foundation of where the unhappiness came from. Once you reconcile these things at their foundation, then you can heal from them and find your internal joy. Also remember that if you can't change your situation then CHANGE your situation. You can't change a problem until you change the way you look at the problem Hope this helps.
For me being inwardly happy has to do with accepting myself for who I am. Shortcomings and all. Most of us do not give ourselves enough credit, and only see what we would change if we could. One day I just stopped trying an accepted myself the way I was made. Best thing I've ever done.
Extremely happy that it worked for you. So many wonderful answers here. I have re-read them again. I love them all. I would have given Best Answer to Brotheryochanon, because from my perspective, his shows best the spirit of Surrender This is crucial.

Logical thinking. Quick note about John In Revelations 22:10, Don't seal the prophetic words of this book, because the time is near. Let the unrightous go on in unrightousness; let the filthy go on being made filthy; let the rightous go on in righteousness; and the holy go on being made holy....
