Cartier Perfume

Updated on August 21, 2009

The brand name Cartier is famous for its jewelry, but they also have a line of fragrances. Three brothers named Louise, Pierre, and Jacques founded Cartier. The company is currently the number one jewelry manufacturer in the world and the second largest watchmaker. They are famous for being the first company to make a wristwatch in 1904 totally revolutionizing who had the privilege and the ability to know the time whenever he or she desired. Cartier perfumes are elegant scents meant mostly for eveningwear. In general, Cartier perfume for women and Cartier perfume for men are oriental scents with touches of vanilla. For this reason, they remind me slightly of Moschino perfumes because those fragrances also are classified oriental and have vanilla as a base note. Perhaps because of the jewelry background, Cartier perfume bottles are often quite distinctive and some even have small sculptures on the top. The only perfumes bottles that I have seen that compare are ones for DKNY perfume that are shaped like apples.  Cartier perfumes are quite distinctive and if you are looking for a new ladies perfume one could be a great addition to your arsenal.

The very first fragrance introduced by Cartier was Must de Cartier perfume released in 1981.  This women’s fragrance can be described as having green top notes and woody essences.  The Cartier website singles out galbanum, jasmine, and vanilla as being the most important scents in this perfume.  A long list of ingredients includes, green mandarin, galbanum, pineapple, bergamot, Brazilian rosewood, peach, carnation, leather, lemon, musk, orchid, yellow narcissus, vetiver, ylang-ylang, jasmine, amber, sandalwood, rose, vanilla, civet, and Tonka bean.  As with almost all of Cartier’s perfumes, the female products use scents that are usually reserved for men’s perfumes and colognes but give them a feminine twist.  For example, a Creed perfume for men called Royal English Leather has a base of leather smells and leather is an ingredient in Must de Cartier.  This timeless scent can be purchased for $100 to $200 an ounce depending on where you purchase it.  In 2000, Cartier released a Must de Cartier for men called Must de Cartier Pour Homme.  This strong male fragrance was inspired by the strong spices and freshness of the orient.  The top note smells of mandarin, anise seeds, and bergamot while the heart and base are constructed of sandalwood, vanilla, and Tonka bean.

Another popular and classic fragrance by Cartier is Panthere De Cartier Perfume released in 1986.  Most people just call it Cartier Panther perfume.  This scent was described in a Cartier perfume review as oriental and floral in nature.  The most powerful scents are of tuberose flower, honey, orange, and animal accents.  In addition to these main scents, Cartier Panther has a combination of a very large number of fragrant notes which include ginger, orange blossom, pepper, grapefruit, rose, nutmeg, carnation, iris, gardenia, freesia, jasmine, vetiver, heliotrope, ylang-ylang, narcissus, sandalwood, Tonka bean, amber, patchouli, musk, vanilla, and oak.  The bottle is quite distinctive because it has a small carving of a panther on top.  This perfume has been re-released several times over its lifetime and as a result, the vintage Panther can only be found with vendors or specialize in discontinued fragrances.  The discontinued release can be purchased for about $450 an ounce where as the normal Panther you can buy for $50 -$55 an ounce.

Le Baiser du Dragon or The Kiss of the Dragon also known as the Cartier perfume Dragon was introduced in 2003. This scent was billed as a fragrance that takes masculine scents and makes them feminine. You could consider Dragon the complete opposite of the Vera Wang perfume Truly Pink. The inspiration was a combination of the rich Chinese culture and Art Deco. The top note is a sweet scent of bitter almonds, orange, and gardenia. The heart of the fragrance is woody with iris, cedar, and musk contributing. Finally, the base has vetiver, patchouli, and benzoin. The combination of citrus top notes and a vetiver base reminds me a bit of the Versace fragrance Black Jeans for men. You can purchase Dragon for about $40 - $60 an ounce.

Eau de Cartier perfume is a unisex fragrance and the only one of its kind made by Cartier. It is a cheery and lighthearted fragrance with elements of yuzu, a Japanese citrus fruit. Violet leaves, cedar and ambergris also contribute to the overall effect. This Cartier perfume is relatively affordable at $23 - $35 an ounce.  It's citrus nature reminds me of Happy perfume for men.
