Cellphones are generally advantageous. Regard cellphones as the most convenient form of communication during EMERGENCIES, i.e. accident, death, robbery and you need to call 911. For this one main reason, cellphones are hard to cast away. There are no disadvantages if you learn to keep it that way, back to the basic; returning to the original cellphone use just before smartphones came into the picture.
Choose the lowest monthly plans and refrain from using apps, and if you are in a country where Pre-paid load is available, then go for it and keep your load for important calls and messages. Charging is not a problem, emergencies rarely happen, just learn to use it as how it really is for.
One more thing, emergencies are not just exclusive to communication, but also when you need to take a picture/video of important occasion and a regular camera is not available.
That's just it! For personal relationship, I'd go for some other medium like FB, e-mail, and Skype. So far it works great.
I have a cellphone and I use it that way, I didn't see any reason to cast it away.
