A US Army sergeant finds a creative outlet via Hubbing
For those of you who do not yet know
him, it is an honor for me to introduce Sgt Wesley Cox, USA. A fellow Hubber and soldier that came to HubPages about the same time I did, I
feel a kinship of the pen with Wes and hope you will too.
Wes -
Do you use your real name here at HubPages and could you explain your
avatar?
Yes. I don't like the idea of hiding behind a pseudonym. What I
have written about has mainly been about my life and the times that I
prefer to remember most. Some, of course, was written to appease the
internet public. My avatar is a symbol that to me means honor,
strength, and justice. Everyday I try to exemplify those traits and
that symbol is a daily reminder. That and Superman is the greatest
superhero of all time.
Your bio tells us that you are a Sergeant in the United
States Army by profession when and why did you join? Have you
served overseas? Are you making it a career? I joined the U.S Army in November of 2002 for several reasons.
Some of those reasons have close ties to the devastation of 2001, others
have to do with family tradition and the local job economy. I have
served three tours of combat duty in the Iraqi theatre of operations.
By the time my current enlistment is up, I'll have a total of eleven
years in; I might as well finish it.
Without I
hope getting too personal, how is your family doing?
It takes a whole different breed of woman to put up with the Army
lifestyle. We are doing ok, and she is the strongest woman I know.
What got you interested in writing and publishing on the
internet? Have you published any books? I have always been of the creative mindset, and have always
loved telling stories. Most of the stories remained in my head until I
purchased my first computer, then I started to write them down.
Publishing on the internet started out being about the money, but
quickly turned into something much more profound. All the positive
feedback received inspired me to push forward, and that I did. Making
around ten bucks a month is far from a full time paycheck by the way. I
do not have any published books yet, but I do have a couple of pieces
submitted to magazines.
You write about many different topics covering fitness,
poetry, diamond jewelry and the Armed Forces. Do you have one topic
that you prefer to write about? Stephen King once wrote a book called "On Writing" and in
this book he says to write what you know. When you stop and think about
things you know, it is important to realize that not everyone knows
what you know. So grab your computer and put your thoughts down on
paper (or screen). Edit it later and you'll be fine. As far as a
favorite topic, I don't know. I like to write what inspires me at the
time.
Your poetry is I think excellent and some have compared you
to Edgar Allen Poe. What inspired you to write poetry?
A comparison like that is humbling to say the least. Poetry
is a good way to let your feelings out without fear of reprisal from
anyone. My inspiration has always been my wife. She is the source of
all my feelings. However, without the gentle prodding and pushing from
PoetLorraine (Brenda) I never would have started.
What authors have inspired you on or off HubPages?
Off HubPages--Dean Koontz, and Stephen King. Those two
authors have taught me the joy of reading and story telling.
Hubbers--PoetLorraine, Dohn121, Ralwus, Pachuca, just to name a few.
There are more but space is limited.
Can you tell us how you found HubPages? What do you enjoy
most about being a Hubber?
I found HubPages while looking for a portal to publish my
writing. HubPages is the easiest way to self publish. The thing I
enjoy the most about being a Hubber is the friends I've met along the
way.
When you are not writing, what do you do with your
time? Is there anything that needs fixing on HubPages?
Nothing needs to be fixed on HubPages, that I could tell.
When I'm not writing I am doing the only thing I could do. That's being
a sergeant, its a full time job.
You took a break several months ago from HubPages (and
we have missed you). Will you be writing again soon? I actually have some material and thought about a return
soon, who knows maybe I'll publish it. I do miss it quite a bit.
Is there anything else you'd like to share with your
fellow hubbers? Keep writing, it all adds up.
