A mother, wife, and evocative writer reveals that creativity runs in the family
1. What was your main reason for joining HubPages?
I had been writing for another site in which I found the required topics stifling. I didn't feel as though I could express myself with so many hindrances. HubPages seemed to be much more than a 'blogger' site, with real writers, real information and of course the possibility of income!
2. Where do you find the time to write so many Hubs?
I am fortunate enough to have an understanding husband who works full time as an OTR Truck driver (hidden meaning - He is gone a lot!). There are times when I must leave my home to do things, these times can be frustrating, yet are very important that I do so. One has to 'get away' from their work from time to time or they go stagnate. When I am driving or out and about I get good ideas for Hubs. My youngest daughter bought me a spiral notebook so I can scribble those ideas down. After arriving home on several occasions and having 'lost' those ideas, she took pity on me. I've spent many years trying to decide what I want to 'be', each occupation has brought me one step closer to what I feel I was meant to do. Write.
3. What topics do you find easiest to write about? Which topics are hardest to write about?
The easiest would be things I am passionate about, things that are important to me and I that have personal knowledge of. Those can also be the hardest, sometimes I have to go deep into myself, face my demons and the mistakes that I have made in my life. At times I have a pile of used tissues sitting on my desk when finished. I find writing has a very cathartic effect on my emotions. Once a Hub is finished, it is like I have been cleansed.
4. You often tackle tough topics (domestic violence, sex, etc), do you base your Hubs on personal experience, just generally speaking, or both?
Yes, I have experienced everything or have been part of the Hubs I have written about. With the exception of 'Woody the Wood Rat', that idea came from my husband when a wood rat from Cadillac, MI jumped out at him in Chicago. I hope that if I tell 'my story' and what I went through, it will help others and they will find the strength to do something about it in their own life.
5. I often find myself laughing or crying when reading your Hubs, I always get the sense that I am experiencing things with you. Who would you say gave you the ability to express your thoughts and emotions so well? Did you always have this ability?
I think I come from a fairly artistic family, my Grand Mother liked to write poetry, as does my oldest daughter. Over the years, dealing with people who haven't allowed me a 'voice' has also helped me to write. In order to get my point across I would sit down and write them letters, so they would have to read what it was that I wanted to say. I wish I would have kept some of those letters, I had some really good work in those! I believe that it has developed over the years, when I took a creative writing class in college I struggled miserably. My instructor said I did poorly in giving a clear picture of what it was that I wanted to say, so I worked harder.
6. What is the most valuable piece of advice you can offer to other mothers?
Watch and listen to your children, they will tell you volumes in their actions and behaviors.
7. All seriousness aside….Have you solved your household’s toilet paper problem?
Funny you should ask that, just the other day I was yelled at "Mom!!! Can you bring me some toilet paper?" Knowing that I had just taken a roll the day before, I mumbled to myself "I swear you guys are still eating it!"
