Dog Crate Covers - Stylish New Trends

Updated on February 21, 2010

Traditionally, dog crate covers were created to serve strictly utilitarian purposes, with little or no thought to style or aesthetic design. All crate covers were made of dull canvas material and they each looked the same. Thankfully, dog supplies manufacturers are realizing that dog crate accessories such as covers and pads can and should be nice enough to fit in with home decor.

Today's crate covers come in a variety of materials intended for different purposes. For pet owners who use wire dog kennels and simply wish to provide a more private space for their dog or reduce the amount of distractions during crating, a breathable fabric is best. Polyester is a popular choice because it offers good ventilation and is manufactured in a wide array of colors.

For a more upscale look, velvet fabrics are becoming popular because of the more chic and fashionable impression of the material. Any fabric used should be scratch resistant for durability and fully machine washable for easy cleaning.

Designer Dog Crate Covers to Compliment Your Decor

Stepping up to an entirely new category of functionality and sophistication are designer dog crate covers. A few vendors are now offering made-to-order designs. Not only will these vendors deliver a cover to custom fit any size or type of crate, but they offer added features that were unheard of until a few years ago.

They can now be purchased with windows on the sides that can be opened and closed using sturdy zippers or roll-up shades. Door flaps similar to those used on camping tents will completely enclose the crate, keeping the occupant safe and warm.

Color-matching is even becoming more common, with custom designs made of the same fabric and pattern as the pet owner's furniture or drapes, often decked out with similar pads or pillows as the finishing touch. If it can be imagined, there is someone who will create it.

Indoor / Outdoor Crate Covers

If you need a cover to use where protection from the weather is required, water-resistant canvas or rip-stop nylon treated with polyurethane are both good choices for an outdoor dog pen .

One made for outdoor use creates shade on hot days and doubles as a water-proof doghouse in the rain. As an added bonus, many of the outdoor crate covers currently on the market are actually attractive enough for indoor use as well.

There is a growing mindset among dog owners that dogs are true members of the family and not just animals to be housed. The products that pet owners purchase now more often reflect this new point of view about the place of the dog in the home. From dog crate covers and pads to sweaters and holiday costumes, dog owners are choosing products that reflect their own tastes and express their love for their dog.

I find dog crate covers work great as a way for the dog to have a cave. Our dogs love to sleep in their kennels when we have it covered.
