What is the best way to train a puppy?

People used to say no and slap the puppy on the bum with a newspaper.
Now that is considered cruel. What is better?

If you mean to go outside potty training it is very simple, take them outside a few minutes after they eat or drink and just really often in general until you know their schedule to empty bladder, etc. If you live in a cold climate it is best to get a cat or dog in early spring when the ground is not really cold to make them not want to go outside. Once they are trained the stay trained even when winter comes.

Thanks Pollyannalana. Your answer makes sense. I am also concerned about how to get the puppy to come, not to run after cars on the road, and to not bite and pull things.

Using Positive training methods create better retention and reliability. It also helps prevent some behavioral issues. Please see my Hub! smile

Positive reinforcement training, which means rewarding the desired behaviors and building on those versus correction-based training. Clicker training is even better, because it is more precise and the clicker or other marker signal provides a clear and consistent way to communicate with the dog during training. See the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior and the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists position statements and recommendations for training - they all recommend positive reinforcement training - not punishment, and not choke chains, leash corrections, prong collars or shock collars. The latter impede learning, erode the dog-owner relationship and can even result in aggression.
