The laziness is just a ploy, so as to surprise us when they take over the world. Sometime after the next nap I believe..

Because they only slink around quickly when and if it suits them! (i.e. yummy bird nearby). When they're content it's like "...can't...move...paws"

Perhaps it's muscle memory like human athletes have?

My oldest cat is 17 year old and sometimes looks arthritic, but when she wants something, she can move around pretty good.

My fattest cat is 15 yrs old and 23 pounds and very lazy and dormant, but when she wants to, she can run really, really fast and she can still climb stairs, although she can't jump anymore.
