They have taken a slightly different evolutionary path giving them different characteristics than apes. Most noteably, apes do not have tails.
Monkeys have tails; apes do not. That's about the limit of my current knowledge without doing some research.
Both "monkey" and "ape" are applied loosely to any animal of the monkey family. But the word "ape" is used more particularly of the gorilla, orangutang, chimpanzee and gibbon, which have very long fore limbs, are tailless, and most closely resemble man in size and structure.
