What do you think is one of the worst things about owning a dog or cat and is it worth it?
Definitely, it is worth having pets. The worst thing will be when they will die. That will be the hardest and worst for me.
I can't imagine my life w/o a cat, at least! I agree w/ wetnosedogs that the only downside is having to say goodbye. Pets can be destructive when young but really no different than toddlers. They love unconditionally, and dogs do best with some obedience training so they can learn how to please their owners. Having a pet requires a time commitment:time for affection, exercise, and play. There is no "worst" part for me, but there are plenty of best parts!
First things first, it is worth it because we enjoy all of our pets.
Now to the bad. The worst thing that our dogs do is whine and bark because they do it at the worst times. Our little dog barks anytime the front door is opened and our lab whines when he gets too excited.
For our cat the worst is the litter box because he is too lazy to bury anything, I will not elaborate on that one.
waste management......................................................
Owning a dog is worth all the medical bills, property damage, irritating whining and constant cries for attention one can throw at you. And boy, are they good at all of those things. Dogs are awesome like that - they drive you nuts, but you still want one.
The worst thing about owning a cat, for me, would be horribly red eyes and constant sneezing. I am not that big on cats (possibly because of the above reasons) so I think I'll keep my head clear, please 'n thanks.
Yeah they seem to bring a little of everything you mentioned that can drive you crazy until you look at those beautiful eyes and melt. Sounds like your allergic to cats which can really be irritating so I guess it's stick with the dogs or take meds
For a dog, you have to irritatingly train puppies. But you always have to be there to walk them three times a day. The morning, lunch, and dinner. Sometimes more. I hate that. For a cat, the litter box isn't too bad but it's not good to breathe in for your health. If you are pregnant, you are not supposed to change the litterbox or handle kitty litter. Just make sure your cats are declawed so your belongings are safe and they are spayed or neutered so they are extra lazy and perfect to be around.
Training pups is definitely a pain but builds the foundation for such a wonderful friendship
The best dog I've ever had was adopted from the shelter. He had refused to eat the food there and was wasting away. He was trained and knew all of the signals for stop, bark, come, shhh, and up. We still miss him in the family.
That's all I'll have is rescue animals, there are so many that need a good home and most of them already trained:)) I'm glad you have adopted, it means so much!!
I couldn't bring myself to declaw my cat although I don't judge those who do it as a last resort.
I am a cat person and can't imagine not having them. Kittens are so funny and seems most felines don't completely outgrow their playfulness. I love cats because they are also independent - a cat can be left with food, water and a litter box for long periods during the day. If a cat is healthy, one need not be overly concerned, as long as it's not left alone for too long. Our cat is spoiled since he is an indoor only cat; if he gets left for more than a few hours, he sure does make a racket when the key is in the door. He probably thinks he's been so neglected! Currently, I haven't any interest in owning a dog since they are much higher maintenance than a cat (next month will make 3 years ago we lost our Border Collie to old age). I can see why doggie day cares have become such big business. I can and do appreciate well mannered dogs with great dispositions. Not only do dogs make good companions for those who are up for the commitment, some are great for security purposes as well. For us currently though, with the horses, goats, chickens, cat and part time house bunny, we have enough going on. Plus w/ having the bunny, finding a dog that wouldn't try and eat her would be too big of a risk and definitely a challenge I'm not ready for.
I am a dog person and love my dogs dearly, they are part of my family, yadda yadda yadda. The worst thing for me with the particular set of dogs I have currently is that one is white and the other light yellow, and my favorite color to wear is black. I am particular about my clothes and my appearance, and I feel like I always have this white hair covering my black pants, my black wool coat, my black hoodie, etc. I swear when I do the laundry I could stand there all day long picking white (or light yellow) hair off of everyone's freshly washed black socks. Our clean clothes are covered in dog hair! Gross! We have dark brown floors, and the hair shows up on it just as glaringly as on my black clothes. So for me it's the constant dog hair picking, vacuuming, sweeping, sticky-taping, etc, to get rid of do hair that never actually seems to go away.
My little white dog is just the sweetest thing ever and my yellow lab is crazy greatness, but next time I am getting black dogs.
Ahhh I also have dogs with white hair (and spots) and know exactly what your talking about. Up until 3 or 4 years ago I hadn't ever had a white dog and now wonder if the hair has been there all the time:) I always have a sticky lint brush with me
The worst things that I could think of are getting the cat food before finish. Otherwise, the cat will bother you until it get something into its stomach. The next problem is, if it passes away, heart break that you wouldn't want to own another cat again. Couldn't stand the pain. Got lots of attachment.
I love my dog and my daughter loves her. The worst thing about owning her is the fact that we are gone all day long. From 7:30am until 5:30pm. I feel bad for her. She is really good and does not have many accidents but when we get home she acts like we have been gone for years. I guess she is kind of use to our routine because when we leave in the morning she does not bark. But if we dare leave anytime after we come home, she will cry at the door.
If I answered this on Monday, it would have been the steaming pile of uncovered love he left me to wake up to. If it was Wednesday I was annoyed at having to go out and get his 'special' cat food in atrocious weather. On Friday it was the under-the-foot-and-everything-else-to-bug thing he does.
But no matter what my cat does, it is worth it. Even the experience of his passing away will be worth it. And there will always be more after him, no matter how hurt I am, how frustrated or how omg-really-cat! I am. Cause caring for any animal, reptile, dog, cat, hamster etc, is worth it.
