What Indian movie would you recommend to a new American audience?

I was a Systems Admin for a software company and became very good friends with a guy from India who went back after a stay. Both our families would picnic together and my family learned a good bit from his family. We used to go to an Oakmont, PA theatre that showed Hindi movies on Saturday nights. I loved them but can not remember the titles or actors and actresses. What titles should I show friends to get them interested in a good way? Slumdog Millionaire has piqued a couple friends interest. I like the ones with singing, fighting, and the whole package you get with "real" Indian movies.

A good place to start would be with the Apu Trilogy by the master film maker of India and one of the greatest of world film makers in the 20th century, Satyajit Ray--

    Pather Panchali
    Apur Sansar

The River by Jean Renoir is also a great film made in India, about India.

Once you've watched the above films you are ready for three more recent, serious and powerful films by Deepa Mehta
