mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......Tubby and the Lantern
Green eggs and Ham and Mother Goose Nursery Ryhmes D
I read the Ramona series by Beverly Cleary. I don't think its popular anymore these days, but I remember its the first book I read out loud and I loved it.
Beverly Cleary! Never out of fashion. I remember my first time....my grade 5 teacher read Otis Spoffard chanting 'I see London, I see France, I see Ellen's underpants..' and the whole classroom erupted into embarrassed, shocked, muffled, but delighted, laughter! (This was 1959). I found the complete reissued set in the early 80s and surprised my sister with them, then went on to read all the books to my own children. I hope to do the same for my 'grands'.
Having said all that, my FAVOURITE childhood book was 'Wind in the Willows'....I still read it and am introducing my 4 year old grand-daughter to life along the river and the magic of 'messing around in boats'....and that wild Mr. Toad.
I see we are going a little bit older mmmm..
I enjoyed Pippi Longstocking and read many Beverly Cleary books, I also love Little Women which I still have that book to this very day and Jane Eyre novels.
We have really enjoyed "Roopkatha" (In Hindi and Bengali languages). These are the fairy tales of India.
Our grandmothers used to tale those stories and we also read this when learnt reading.
These were amazing. I may like to read some even today!!
Sweet childhood memory!

I guess it would depend on genre... but I immediately think of William Golding's first novel, "Lord of the Flies," 1954 and The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas - 1894,
My father gave me the Little House on the Prairie series when I was a kid and it was my favorite bedside reading for a looooong time
"doctor dolittle" by hugh loften was the first book i ever read and has staying power in my mind still-the second "a squire for king aurthur"whos authors name escapes me but possibly led me to every book written on king arthur since ,the last ones being the ones written by bernard cornwell-"enemy of god "etc.
