    Was it better on hubpages.com?

For those who have been here then, how was it better to be on Hub Pages's own domain as we have read on HubPages weekly?

    It depends what you mean.

Before 2011, when we are all on HubPages' own domain, it was much better - but it wasn't because we were on one domain.  It was because Google's algorithm was different, and we were all getting lots and lots and lots of Google traffic.

Then Google changed its algorithm and we all lost more than two-thirds of our traffic.  That's why HubPages introduced the sub-domains, to try to recover - and it worked, for a while.  Google has now got wise to that and the sub-domains are not helping us any more, so we are going back to one big site.

I did think it was better on one big site because instead of each Hubber only caring about his own little sub-domain, we knew we were all together on one big site and we worked together more.

Thank you for taking time to answer Marisa.  I thought 'our' little world here is a pretty friendly one and there is a fair degree of  interaction between us. How does a name change encourage more interaction?

There is some interaction, but the thing is - many Hubbers don't interact, they focus on promoting their own sub-domain.   When there were no sub-domains, Hubbers understood that the only way to succeed would be to promote the site as a whole

Good insights. So, Google caused sub-domains and now again, Google caused integration. Let us be integrated and try to maintain our sovereignty.
Thanks, Marie, for asking this question.

Many of us juggle to fit in learning, reading, writing, and living for ourselves and others. As soon as traffic falls HP slaps a Not Featured sign.  So it seems to me if we don't promote our work, we sink. Is there any payoff for us in the new system

Promotion is only a short-term fix, and a waste of effort if all it does is attract a trickle of traffic to get a Hub Featured again.  You need to work out WHY Google is not noticing that Hub - what can you do to make it more search engine friendly?
