Decisions based on emotions are hazardous to one's health. If he makes this decision based on his emotions, then he will only cause himself more grief than as if he stayed. Thus, his action will only be a detriment to him, but will also effect the lives of some of the Hubbers. So, he does more damage than realized.
The question is how do you get someone to step away from an emotionally charged reasoning, reinforced by his faith, for which, he has in himself to make the right decision?
Do you see yourself- rationalizing with him? I don't.
