I've turned down offers to travel to America like a million times. Most people think I'm nuts. Afterall its AMERICA right! Sheez, as far as I'm concerned, the only thing that's bringing me to America is Film Directing School and Hollywood. I mean its kinda hard to win an Oscar if you aint got affiliations with Hollywood, you know. Ha! so till I'm ready. Kapoosh! But you wanna know where I really wouldn't mind going, even right now - Compton. Yep, that's where the Blood and the Crips stay. Plus all the shootouts happen there. Its supposed to be one of the most violent places on Earth! And hey, it isn't even in Nigeria. Its in Los Angeles. Right where Hollywood is, where all those Kardashian chicks attend their parties! Hmmm, so America has some nice spots - Irohner and dennisematt's crib, Hollywood, and Compton. So you scared of going there or what? Compton, that is. wink

well Compton LA is not all that big of deal to me. Sorry. Yes, i am scared to go there. I live in a town, that has about 2,692 people in it. My familly makes up 5... We dont have a police staion, fire department, post office or library. 2 gas stations, both are good old "country stores" with pizza and sandwiches, and pickled pigs feet. no joke. The guy who lives down the road form me has a 50cal machine gun and peole pay him to get to shoot it into the woods. I get to hear it evey Sunday afternoon.I live in Redneck country, and its fine with me.

I have been through most parts of LA, Compton, China Town, Downtown LA, of course Hollywood, Bakersfield, Fulterton (OC really sorta) Santa Monica etc...

I can say, I loved Santa Monica, Fulterton is okay (not really that cool) Hollywood is fun, met Jack Black, had a run in with Spike Lee where the guy I was with at the time talked mad shite to him (in a nervous way because he was going to UCRiverside majored in Creative writing to be a screen play writer) told Mr. Lee that he would see him at the top.  Cool guy.

Had 1 drink at the Sky Bar because we nearly peed our pants when 1 long island ice tea was about $30.00.  Lucky for us there was a regular there who bought it for us when he saw our faces.

But I never want to go to Downtown LA again.  *shutter* that place was dirty, stinky... it was like Tijuana in real America.

I used to live in LA and the San Fernando Valley, and I've worked in Tijuana. If I had to go back to any of those places, it would be a tossup, but I've found that away from the tourist traps, most of the people are nicer and much more laid back in Tijuana.

When I lived in CA, on the other hand, my neighbor was killed in some organized crime hit and we had people like Richard Ramirez making the scariest places to be in the LA area people's own homes. Going back to visit, I've never been fazed by the neighborhood I'm in. They've all got their good and bad.

Thanks for the input Ladies. I'm just saying, Compton, as f-ed up as it is, people still go there, despite all the dangers of getting popped and all. Then why are people scared of coming to Africa, cos of getting shot. Boom! I'm out.

who, exactly, is scared of Africa? and I betcha they are scared of LA also...people go lots of places. Like, the dentist, the hospital, crazy...those are scary too. Some people find things interesting that others dont. I have never known anyone who went to Compton, for a fun vacation, I have known people who went to Africa for a fun vacation. Feel any better now?

Exactly, I know people that have paid thousands of pounds/dollars for once in a lifetime safari trips to Kenya, I know gap year students that have paid thousands of dollars/pounds to go spend a gap year volunteering in Africa, but I put my hand on my heart and genuinely say that I have never, ever, heard the word 'Compton' before!

I have no idea where or what Compton is to be honest. But the whole LA tourist thing does not appeal to me in the slightest.... seeing videos of shallow tourists taking buses around the homes of the rich, I mean come off of it.... would you want people pointing at your house every half an hour telling the world where you live? You wouldnt even be able to water your own grass if you wanted to, without buses full of gawping imbeciles taking photos and shouting at you to wave...

I also find it a little f'd up that we get television adverts in the UK with Arnie begging Brits to go there to work..... whilst tens of thousands of people in LA are living in communal tent cities.

I love America, I plan on going back to Las Vegas and New York when the exchange rate works in my favour, but LA just does not appeal to me...

Compton is not all that bad, I had driven through Compton plenty of times when I had to go to work. I am not saying things do not happen in Compton but they also happen everywhere across LA. Compton tends to always get a bad rap and it is not as bad as it sounds. smile
