I think the best advice is to write about your interests. Also befriend the old timers so they can serve as  your mentor

Doesn't the above just about say it all!

Write quality hubs that are interesting to your niche market. -or- try out many niches while you are here on HubPages and see if you can find a niche market.

    Write good quality hubs.

Follow peoplle (their hubs) that interest you and try to support them as much as you can.  As you follow more and more hubbers (not just to get them to follow you) intereact with them.  Make comments on their hubs, as much as you can.

    Write good quality hubs

Ask questions, start Forums, answer Questions, interact in Forums.  In other words, be as active as you can on HubPages.  If you don't have a lot of time, be selective rather than going for a lot of 'quantity'.

    Write good quality hubs.

Have fun and stay professional no matter what is going on around you.

    Write good quality hubs.

Good luck and welcome to HubPages.

The best way is to read hubs on this topic (there are umpteen number of hubs) and get versed with the faqs http://hubpages.com/faq/
