When someone sends you fan mail there is no way of knowing. Why isn't there an alert?
I always get an email letting me know. Do you have your email set to not give you notifications?
If you want to find out whether you have fan mail you can simply click on account, activity and then fan mail. I receive my fan mail notices via my email. Becky's answer with a question gives you a way to remedy your dilemma.

Might be a brain fart here, but I have a couple of fans I'd like to leave fan mail for...how do you find that option? TX in advance.

There should be a tab for sent messages or sent fan mail. I cannot find this anywhere on the site. Thanks!
