What happens if you don't moderate your own comments? I tend to forget then go in and do a bunch at once.  But I was wondering if the failure to moderate them meant they couldn't be seen or weren't counted or something?

I'm not sure, but I try to keep on top of moderating them just in case.

Hi Natalie, it depends on the settings you have chosen for your Comment Capsule. Some authors let comments show up automatically, but it's also possible to require your approval before comments appear on the article.

Not their comments, my replies to comments.  There is the button on each of my replies to moderate my own comment.

Natalie, your own comments are automatically posted. You don’t need to approve them. The moderate button is needed in case you want to delete your own comments later.

For example, when someone says something that doesn’t add value to the article for other readers, such as ”nice hub”, then I leave a reply thanking them. However, a week later I delete both their comment and my reply.

That gives them enough time to see that I appreciate their comment, but at the same time, removing these types of comments helps increase Google ranking. So that’s why you need to be able to delete your own comments too.

I answer most of them, but many of my readers ask as many questions as I get in my Q&A area. So I think it helps to keep the articles fresh since readers are still interested.

As far as I know, you don't have to moderate your own comments. You only get that option to delete your comment if you decide to do so.

I believe they can only be seen if you approve them. I check mine daily. I enjoy the interaction with my readers and I believe it adds content as well. If course I suppose I feel somewhat obligated to respond quickly because the comments I get are often time sensitive.

Christy, This reminds me that we still have a bug I reported last year that Matt was working on. His last email to me about this was in November.

The bug causes some comments to get moved to the "Admin Approved" filter even after I already approved them and replied to them. This used to make me think I missed them and I almost replied a second time – until I realized it was a bug.

I started ignoring Admin Approved comments for that reason, and I think no one else pays attention to it either. If they had, there would be a lot more people reporting the issue.

Christy, please remind Matt about this. It's probably unnecessary overhead for the server anyway. I can tell it's not a human admin but an erroneous bot.
