I do my best to follow the correct practices for image usage on HubPages. Some of my images are my own, and some are public domain. But sometimes they are CC images, for which I include appropriate attribution.

I understand that the same rules apply on social media as HubPages or anywhere else. Only use images you have permission to use, public domain or CC images you are citing correctly.

But how does that apply when sharing a link to an article on social media? The first image will appear on Facebook or Twitter, but without attribution. The attribution is in the article itself.

    Is that enough?

I feel like this is something I once knew but since I rarely use social media the information seems to have fallen out of my head. Everything I find online relates to sharing images directly to social media, not an image that pops up because of sharing an article.

All you are doing is sharing a link. If you do not directly upload an image you got nothing to worry about.

True, sharing a link only. We can share links to any article whether it is your own article or anybody's article. The only thing to take care of is your articles should contain properly attributed or own images. When sharing other's articles, it is their responsibility and you are not liable for any breach.

As I'm mostly writing about famous persons and their specific guitars, I've got to use images which are not mine. I always accredit them correctly. I had one person email me to say I couldn't use his image of the late Ozzy Osbourne guitarist, Randy Rhoads.

Big whoopsie do. I simply found another.

Oh, I do have one other story. This from probably 7 years ago. I had a webpage about the Deep Ellum area of Dallas, Texas. There is a great robot sculpture there. It's not really that great. It's just there and it's something to look at. I grabbed a photo. I got emailed about it by an angry guy. He was not angry I used his photo. He was angry I didn't link to his photography website.

I've never considered using a photo on Facebook required attribution. There's no way for me to make a penny off of that deal. I don't think a body would be able to do anything else with their life were they forever trying to find their photographed being used on Facebook without permission.

Just be careful. Grabbing images from blogs and other sites and linking to the site isn't necessarily proper attribution, and it doesn't mean you are allowed to use the image as long as nobody complains. And copyright violations have little to do with whether or not you are earning from using someone else's work.

Just as we don't like when people steal our text and use it without permission, the same is true for photographers.

Remember, too, that if you taking an image from a another blog without asking first, you risk that they themselves stole the image from somewhere else. Linking to their site doesn't get you off the hook if someone else owns the copyright.

There are lots of cc images on wikimedia with famous people. To be safe maybe check there first?

The social media platforms fetch the preview and take the first image on the article link.
