Would it be better to have text capsules with letter/character counters?

    What's your thoughts? smile

I like the idea, but I would like a word counter instead of letters or characters.

sunforged, I've been using the add-on you recommended, but just found out today when I went to upgrade to Firefox 3.6 that it is not supported.  Hopefully they will update this useful little add-on.  I especially like being able to tally multiple text selections in sequence.

I guess no one likes the idea? hmm

I posted a cool firefox add-on that does that to any highlighted text in the knowledge exchange.

For now, although you dont have a running word count in a capsule, your hubmetric tab is only a click away

but, doesn't the hub have to be published before hubmetrics starts calculating? I think I've tried to see word count before publishing and couldn't. hmm

For a little while it was doing that. But before that stretch of time (I noticed it happening to me weeks ago) and now, you can see the word count.

Not necessarily. If you leave the hub unpublished for long enough, it will start to grow stats, the word counter will work at that point even with the hub still unpublished

    WinXP?

I guess your saying you still use the default IE as your browser, so you are not able to use a firefox plug in?

If that is the case..tsk tsk...IE is absolutely worthless in comparison to firefox

If you save your Hub unpublished, it will eventually have collected stats - not right away though. It can sometimes take even a day for hubmetrics to show up.

sunforged, how does that highlighted text feature work? It sounds a lot easier than pasting them into a word doc, lol!

I don't see a need for it as I write in a word program first then copy paste it to the text module. It's much easier to get your spelling and grammar correct before putting it into a text module.

But for those that are confident with their spelling and grammar, I don't have a problem with it.

is that a view from a completed, unpublished hub?

maybe I missed it when I was checking.
    thanks sf

Not at all! A word counter, plus your idea, in the text capsule when you write or edit would be a great idea.

Hey, Cags, you could also try Google Docs if you prefer to compose before putting into a hub.  I have a word processor, Open Office on my comp., but I find myself using GDocs more lately.  There is a word counter in the Tools menu, and you can use your normal Google login you use for adsense.

Not a time waster ...your request would be more useful than the current set up.  I was just sharing options you could use right now.

A word counter wouldn't be a bad idea.
Although I write on Word, I edited my two Hubs whilst creating them. Since my aim is to write tightly, I had to keep 'saving unpublished' and going to Hubmetrics. It was a bit of a pain, to tell the truth.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean.

I always completely compose the article before creating a hub using MSWORD, word counts can be gotten there, then I cut and paste into text capsules and headings.

Usually I put all the capsule breaks in as well(on the MSdoc) and the photos I'm going to attach. Then I can put the hub together quickly since its already planned and prepped.

I use the word counter on OO when I draft the Hub. But once I've pasted onto the Hub, I start changing things. A word counter would be very hepful.

I compose everything in advance - not only for HubPages, but for other social bookmarking sites. It's all cut-and-paste for me, too, but I use a wordcounterwiz template (PDF) to save my work while it's in progress.

I hope that doesn't mean you think HubPages is a social bookmarking site!

Actually, looking at your extremely short Hub, maybe you do...

    grrr.

I decided to put this hub together in pieces instead of writing it all off-line. I was going to use the word count from the hub stats.

    but stats are disabled tonight...

    grrr.

    lol

I think it would be a great idea to have word count capsules. Even while you're working on your hub, to have a running count after you do periodic saves.
