Questions about our articles and how they affect overall score

I have several articles that dropped in both scoring and interest, once moved to Letter Pile. They were dragging my overall score down, so I unpublished them. Nothing has changed, they still seem to be affecting my overall score ?? I've also deleted several articles and it has, apparently, made no difference! Is it better to delete articles rather than to unpublish them or will another article automatically drop in score to keep an overall score within a certain range?
    Thoughts?
    Thanks for your assistance!

HubPages says score is worthless, and that's what you'll hear from many other users, allegedly the staff don't even know how the score is calculated. I took it upon myself to see if I could manipulate it, and the only thing I could determine accurately was that word count in a newly published article, timeframe between publishing, getting moved to a niche site, and topic choice have a direct effect on the score.

Any time I write in poetry or about racial issues there is an immediate 1-3 point drop, and it is usually permanent until my next article. Another consideration is keywords, though not completely proven by me, used in the forums and comments on articles. My score fluctuates greatly depending on what I am discussing in comments and forum posts, but usually defaults back as soon as I stop posting comments unlike with article postings.

The score should be removed, and only visible to HubPages staff since the reason for it is either "worthless" as they claim, or only relevant for staff to know. Leave your articles, I say, don't delete them for the score.

I rarely delete anything, just upgrade my articles. I do find that if I improve my articles with the lowest score that their score increases but they are always replaced by another that drops. So, no matter what I do my average hub score is always 73.

Thanks Jodah, not a bad score, mine isn’t quite that high, but it has stayed  the same for the past few years, no matter what I do…or don’t do, it’s perplexing!  I have attained consistency in overall score, if nothing else. wink
I too have been upgrading more than usual, here of late and taking advice, so we’ll see what happens with that.
        Thanks, appreciated!

Hub score and author score don't really matter.

If they are really low, like say, under 40, it could be a sign that there's something seriously wrong.

But otherwise, I would just ignore them and focus on things like views and earnings.

      Hi Paul,
No, never that low, even as a novice!
      Thanks for the feedback!

Hi AB.... First of all, you write very well. If you want your score to go up, it is wise to use the Hubpage template for evergreen articles. You'll want to take advantage of polls, maps, tables, and callouts. Your articles tend to be opinion pieces. That is fine, but in order to increase your score, you need to back up everything you say with statistics to make your article evergreen, as opposed to writing something you might find in a blog. This is where tables and callouts come in handy. If you use a video, make it relevant to the article, as opposed to inserting a music video, for example, which may have nothing to do with the article itself.
If you do all of these things, there is no reason why your score cannot be placed in the 75% to 95% range. It is more time consuming to write an evergreen article, but it is also challenging in a satisfying way.
As for unpublishing articles, I have not found that to be useful. In fact, I often regret having done so. It is best to make the article better instead. Hope this helps. smile

Hi Yves, I do enjoy writing about politics and current events, no doubt, that is my passion! I have often thought that I am probably at the wrong site, but here I am...going on 10 years now. wink

AB, I do not think you are at the wrong site. Your points are valid and I would love nothing more than to see you drive them home with great statistics. Drop some jaws, as it were!

Your score does not really matter. It does not bring more traffic or revenue. There is some correlation between how well you write and some other factors but this is more for your personal sense of achievement than anything else.

Also, your score will fluctuate based on factors completely beyond your control.

Don't obsess about this and I wouldnt delete any article that is getting some traffic.
