Is fiction a way to go?

    Hi everyone!

As the subject states: Is there a place for fictive articles here on Hubpages? Have someone actually tried it out and if, how did it go?

To specify my question - I am mostly talking about short fictive stories. Those could, for example, be a series of articles that together completes a story or just purely standalone articles.

Am I completely off the line here, or is fiction a good subject to write about?

Not for earnings, no. But if you want to connect to other fiction writers and get your pieces on Letterpile, then yes. Writers like billybuc and Marie Flint are good to connect with in this regard, though I think Marie Flint might not be active here anymore.

So, if you want to write it to earn money, fiction likely won't generate enough traffic for earnings. I did a couple fiction pieces here and to me it was fun. Outside of this site, I like writing poetry but I probably wouldn't do it here because it doesn't get traffic nor generate income.

Okay, well I will think about it. Asked mainly because it was on my mind for a long period of time. The reason why it sounded like an appealing idea to me was that it maybe would have the potential to stand out, but I see the problems with it in terms of traffic, et cetera. However, maybe fanfiction with the right keywords would be a searchable topic? Only brainstorming here...

Poetry, fiction, opinion pieces can all be fun and rewarding to write, but don't generally do well here in terms of views and earnings. Drier material works better. At first I found it frustrating writing about things like DIY and factual guides, but I came to enjoy it over time.

Well written stories could be transferred to Letterpile. But Letterpile is also notorious for being the worst performing niche site.

IMO, fiction generally doesn't do well online too. Unless:

    1. You're already a famous author, with people searching for your name.

    2. You're writing fan fiction in a devoted group.

    3. You're writing seriously smoking hot erotica.

    4. You're in a large writing community with a lot of fans.

I guess the third point is not even to be considered here on Hubpages? big_smile

If you want lots of views and earnings, I don't think it's a great place for fiction.

The problem with fiction and poetry is that big views on here tend to come via people searching Google and it's unlikely that people will search for a particular title by a writer who isn't famous.

HubPages don't recommend splitting articles up into a series, part 1, part 2, etc. You should always aim for standalone.

Alright, I get it. smile Well, it was just an idea. However, I will think about it anyway. There is still an option to share on social media, etc. That could maybe work.

Fiction might be best done as ebook, either as one long work, or as collection of shorter pieces. Then you would promote it via social media etc.?

People post fiction at Medium, too. I suspect it's not generally very successful there, but I don't know for sure,

There's a lot of sex fantasy stuff at Medium. At my age, and with my hurty hip, I have to click 'dismiss story'. I'd rather have a cup of tea big_smile

Hubpages could feature "how to" DIY sex articles to compliment the content on Medium smile Like "How to Make Your Own Dildo From Odds and Ends Found About the House"

Maybe on Medium or create a Kindle book? Try and build up a following on Medium first, otherwise anything you post early on will end up down the list as stuff appears in chronological order.
(Just noticed Paul got there before me with the suggestions smile)

Have heard about Medium. Do you write there? smile Is it similar to Hubpages?

Yes, I just started in the last few months, but the only topics that suit me are physics and maths. The best thing to do is have a look at the type of articles people write there. You may be able to see a selection without paying a subscription. There's a broad range of content there, typically people musing about things, opinion pieces and personal stories, but unlike Hubpages, it's not really a place for "How to" type guides. There aren't any ads, and members earn when other members read their content, funds coming from membership fees. Google "Medium topics" and you'll get an idea of what sort of stuff is on the site.

        Jan -

Glenn Stok has a couple of beginners' guides to Medium on here, if you're not familiar with Medium.

I have a HubPages vs Medium article

It's kind of both similar and completely different! Haha!

There are a lot of people writing short fiction and flash fiction here e.g. Bill Holland, Chris Mills etc. Just check Letterpile and you will find a lot, so it isn’t a new idea. There are also specific categories for it under creative writing. Yes, you can share the link on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest etc. So, if you have a desire to write it, do so. You just won’t make a lot of money from it.
