To niche or not to niche?

Do you feel it's better to write about what comes to mind, regardless of topic, or to write about one particular topic?

I have several articles on makeup, skincare and beauty. There are a few that perform well that are on DenGarden or WeHaveKids. However, I've focused mainly on beauty topics.

I'm trying to decide if it would be better to stick with that as a main topic, or simply write about whatever topic comes to mind. They accidentally deleted my account awhile ago, so I don't have any followers that are coming back for beauty articles. Almost all of my traffic is organic, anyway, so it's not like it would hurt anything to write about every topic that comes to mind now. On the other hand, I don't know if it really matters, either. So, what would you do?

I think it wholly depends on whether you really want to do it or not. But for someone who has been writing different kinds of topics, even often conceptualizing things that are beyond my capability, the benefits to diversify oneself far exceeds the risks.

Besides, what's to lose in learning new stuff along the way? It's always better to go out of your comfort zone to try and discover new things. You might be even surprised to the things that your writing can be capable of. smile

That's actually why I thought about it. There are so many benefits to it, and I could reach various audiences. I'm a writer, and work with digital marketing agencies writing content, so I know quite a bit already about so many topics. It makes sense to just write a little about everything.

I do write on any topic that comes to mind if it helps the public good.

And, besides I don't want to be specialized on a particular stream. It's best that you carry on the path you've carved for yourself. The question of deleting your account has nothing to do with that. It must be something that Hubpages has been against.

Seriously, you can create another account with another email.

    Diversity counts. Go for it.

Write what works. So if you write about, say, making masks for children's parties, and it attracts a lot of interest (e.g. views and earnings), write more articles in a similar vein.

There's something to be said for having a specific field of expertise. You can project yourself as an expert or enthusiast for that particular topic.

However, the downside is that the writing online for HP thing is unstable: a niche site that's doing well one day, may crash and burn the next. If you write a lot and rely to some extent on the income, a variety protects you to some extent for the big swings that can happen.

Thanks for the insight. It never occurred to me that the niche sites may crash and burn. I think I will start writing on a variety of topics for the various niche sites.
