    Maybe they never went away?

I checked, and there are no banner ads on my end.

I've seen them on desktop, not sure about mobile devices.

Edit. I can see them on my phone. The banner is a blank grey bar that follows you down the screen when you scroll, obscuring everything. It stays on screen for about 24 seconds, displays an ad for about 3 seconds, then disappears. The grey bar is on top of long white spaces where photos and ads should be, so the whole appearance is really off-putting for readers. I wish ad loading could speed up, 24 seconds is way too long.

I have checked it on my phone (not yet on desktop). But I do agree that ads, in general, still take a lot of time to load.

My articles have one banner ad at the top of the page that goes away as you scroll down. Then there's another static banner at the bottom that contains an "x" to close it. Much less annoying than previously, for sure.

So maybe an attempt to make more revenue at the expense of user experience. Hopefully that's not the case and they won't be put back on other sites.
