Do articles that sit on HubPages.com count as previously posted?

I have a short story I want to submit to Story Unlikely. They charge different rates for originals and reprints, both of which are accepted. The story I want to submit was originally posted on HP, but it's currently sitting in the original domain and does not come up in SERPs when I type in the title. I'm also revising the story. My question is: Do I submit my story as "original" or "reprinted"?

A good question. I’m curious too. Are those the only options on a drop-down menu?

They don't have a drop down menu. Articles are submitted through a Submit button. If accepted, they are paid at the rate of eight cents per word for originals and one cent per word for reprints. All submissions are considered first for their magazine, then for their podcasts. Upon submittal, the author includes the title, genre, whether it's an original or reprint, where it was first posted if a reprint, and rate of compensation, if any. Of course, rate of compensation on HP is a moot point. I would have no way of knowing how many of my pennies earned were for the short story to which I refer.

If it was in the public domain, which it was, then it was previously published.

If it is still published on hp.com then it remains in the public domain, regardless of whether or not a particular search engine is good enough to find it.

Whether a revised or rewritten story counts as new material is a much more difficult question to answer as it depends on how different it is from the original, which can involve multiple factors and a degree of interpretation.

Paul, the premise and storyline hasn't changed; I'm simply going to add a bit more detail. That said, in order to play it safe and be as truthful as possible, I'll call it a reprint.

      Thanks for your input.

Is not a re-print story the same thing that is labeled duplicate content? I'm just curious and wondering?

Not according to Story Unlikely's submission guidelines. In fact, they encourage reprints as long as the author retains full ownership. Accepted submissions appear in their magazine along with other authors whose work has been approved.

I double-checked the location of the short story I want to submit. It's currently on the LetterPile domain, not the original HP domain as I originally stated. So, I will definitely have to call it a reprint when I submit my entry.

If you can rewrite the entire content in a different (unique) tone, you can claim it as an original article. That's what I may do, with my articles, when I publish them elsewhere.
