Disabled Ads?

Are we not supposed to be notified by e-mail when we get Ads disabled on HP, or do we just happen across them as I keep doing?

I had three disabled this morning and not a word from HP as to why.

And it's a moderator and not a filter.

It'd help a whole lot if they take the time to disable ads, they would take the time to send a notification and let me know why they did so I can look into fixing it.

Ads are disabled by an automatic filter, they are then manually reviewd by a moderator.

Cagsilposted 14 years agoin reply to this

        Actually Thisisoli, you're wrong.

I have ads disabled on one of my hubs and it states that the automatic filter did not disable them, a moderator did.

And, to agree with Sabre, I was not contacted by the moderator who disabled the ads on my hub.

And, HubPages has ALWAYS had a policy of sending a message to inform a hub writer "why?" the ads were disabled.

thisisoliposted 14 years agoin reply to this

That might just be the automatic message, however I would like to hear from hubpages staff to clarify whether there is a manual moderation on disabling ads, as well as disabling flagged hubs.

Cagsilposted 14 years agoin reply to this

The content of this hub has been reviewed by a moderator and it was determined not to be suitable for advertising. In order to protect our relationships with advertising partners, ad serving has been disabled on this hub. To learn more please review the FAQ entry Why were ads disabled on my hub?

Because this hub was identified manually, and not through our automatic filter, this status will not change if you modify the contents of your hub. Therefore, if you do make significant changes please contact us and we will review them as soon as we can (please include the title or URL of this hub in your message).

Edit: It had nothing to do with any sort of automated system.

I think the one time that it would be moderated manually is when the automatic system did not trip but a user had flagged it.

                Flagging = manual review.

Well an e-mail after the mod review would be really nice.
That way I could e-mail them and say it's fixed rather than wasting their time with me e-mailing them, them having to go back and look, then e-mail me letting me know why, then me fixing it and e-mailing them back.
Instead of 3 e-mails it could be just 2 saving the HP mods some time.

Heck, last time Cag told me why, not HP...and even his was a guess.

You would be best asking HubPages staff that question and not a hubber. Email: team@Hubpages.com

    Hey Sabre,

I have one hub that was recently disabled for ads two days ago and I sent out an email, to find out why it was disabled, because I had not received an email with regards to it.

Not to mention, I also told them flat out to return the hub to it's status, because the hub that was ad disabled had already been moderated by others before.

So the action made absolutely no sense whatsoever. wink

      See?
That's the problem I ran into with Squidoo.
They would do things, then not tell you why.
No matter how many times you e-mailed them....LOL

That's why I came to HP, because they have always been very helpful in getting things straightened out.

Having had several hubs disabled, and my YouTube account disabled this week all without warning or explanation I've come to the conclusion that putting any effort into content that isn't self-hosted is a very very bad idea.

Those who fill these big sites with poor quality self-serving crap have got the right idea.  Because the love doesn't go both ways,  and they can pull the plug on you whenever, for whatever, without explanation.

Sorry about the Hubs and YouTube Mrvoodoo.
I have heard that self hosting really is the way to go for a long time.
But at the moment, I'm not really able to do that.

Thanks, I guess I'm more than a little disgruntled at the moment (not with HP as such, but big sites in general), and Hubpages (at least currently) is one of the better 'big sites' in terms of communication, so hopefully you'll get your issues dealt with soon (or perhaps like YouTube they'll simply remove any and all 'contact us' options, and be done with us.) smile

I think HP does indeed have an automated system - it is probably triggered by specific words or keywords in the Hubs/Hub Titles.

Try an experiment - start a hub and include words like "kids", or "Balls" in it. Leave it unpublished. I think you will immediately get a sign of crossed dollar.

    1. Cagsil profile image70
Cagsilposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Yes, HubPages does have an automated filtering system, but it is in reference to things that are in direct violation(blatant) of TOS of HubPages and/or Adsense.

It does not have an automated system which states that a moderator viewed the hub and disabled the ads. As my post earlier states...a moderator reviewed the hub, then disabled the ads.

And, I've still not heard from them for now what is 3 days. That means, that hub is losing money, because it's constantly drawing clicks. hmm

      1. sabrebIade profile image78
sabrebIadeposted 14 years agoin reply to this

        Yeah, that's what worries me.
This time it didnt happen, but last time the disabled Hub was one of my highest earners and it was down for almost 3 days.

        But you remember that...LOL

        Edit:
Now one of my disabled Ads Hubs has two little red triangles for increased traffic.

        Bummer.

    sabrebIadeposted 14 years ago

Okay...I found out what was going on.
They e-mailed me and said I had pictures that were too provocative on there.

Example of picture (so you'll know what is unacceptable):

    http://a.imageshack.us/img705/6816/2422458.jpg

So that was what the problem was.
I removed the pics and e-mailed them back.

    1. Cagsil profile image70
Cagsilposted 14 years agoin reply to this

      That is provocative?

WOW! How stupid is that? lol

        Evidently it is.
Of course there were other pics, but that's one of the ones they noted.
I didn't want to publish all of them here, just one to show what not to do.

          I'm sorry but that's a wee-bit too conservative.

Next thing you know, they will not allow people to sell women's lingerie, because the pictures are too provocative.

          Sounds like religious b.s. lol

    Hey Sabre,

I'm sick and tired of playing this foolish game. This same hub had already been set by multiple moderators and changed several times.

So, now a 1000-3000 per month hub has been destroyed. It's been deleted. It has been up since April and had over 20000 views. And now no longer exists.

Oh well. HubPages wants to continue to play games, then the traffic will be lost. I just checked on it's earnings and isn't much, so gone. hmm

Thank you Sabre. It's a real shame though. hmm

@IzzyM, Thank you to you too. It's a bit ridiculous. I don't see anything wrong with the picture Sabre posted earlier either. But, I've already had the argument with Staff about the subjective nature of the word "provocative", and how it could be made to appear "however one wishes it to appear!". hmm

Hey I sympathise with you two! I've just put up a new hub with the S word in the title, selling items that Amazon have put the S word in front of, but the only way I could get published with ads was to remove all written reference to the dreaded word except in the first paragraph. The filters kicked in and yet the hub is harmless and family orientated in my opinion, unless women aren't part of the family.
I know they want to clean things up, buy hey this is getting ridiculous.

LOL...I saw "S" word and though Sh*t and thought..."Why would Izzy be writing a Hub about Sh*t?" and it dawned on me...S*X!

BTW...loved your Cat Halloween costume Hub!

And do you know how to friend someone on Hub Spin?
Saw you there today and tried but couldnt find a button.

And could I possibly get MORE off topic?
I think I just hi-jacked my own thread.
      Must be going manic...wheeeeeeeee!

      LOL...sorry.

It has just happened to one of mine too after many months of it being OK with ads! So what has changed? And how are we supposed to know what words we have to change in a hub to get ads allowed again? I haven't the time to experiment!

  12. Kyriana profile image69
    Kyrianaposted 14 years ago

Bard, I hope you get good news on your ads.

I woke up today to find ads on one of my hubs disabled by a moderator and had no email or explanation why. It says the hub was identified manually and to contact them after I've made changes. I don't know what to change on it so I sent an email to find out what's going on.

The hub has been up for awhile and represents 33% of my adsense earnings, a lot of the the traffic is from google, which should mean it's coming up in search. It has had about 1700 viewers and the most comments of any of my hubs.

  13. sabrebIade profile image78
    sabrebIadeposted 14 years ago

    Here we go again.
You know it's really funny that when I get ads disabled, it's always on a Hub that's doing really well.
I have a Hub that's hit almost 1000 views today and suddenly the ads go bye bye.
The Hubs that get 5 or 6 hits a day all seem okay though.

And no e-mail letting me know the ads were disabled.
    Again.

    Good thing I'm not paranoid.

  14. sabrebIade profile image78
    sabrebIadeposted 14 years ago

That Hub that got the ads killed yesterday is over 1,200 hits in 24 hours.
Its been around for over 8 months.

From what I have seen, "wrong" is very much in the eye of the beholder.
As far as I could tell, there was nothing "wrong" on the Hub the 8 months before it took off.

  15. sabrebIade profile image78
    sabrebIadeposted 14 years ago

1897 hits on that one Hub in the past 24 ours and still no Ads.
And no reply to any e-mails.

  16. sabrebIade profile image78
    sabrebIadeposted 14 years ago

Two days later, the traffic is dying off that Hub because the news is getting old, and still no ads.
And no reply to any e-mails.
I lost everything I could have made on that Hub.

Probably HP hired very religious moderators, that kind of picture in Europe is everywhere: newspapers, commercials, advertisements....
The way HP staff is running the website and treating writers is the reason why I left the site. At the end HP earns money through writers' work, not staff's work.
And if this sentence will cause another drop in traffic as a  punishment it's not so bad as I'm going to move all my articles on my personal website; and see for myself if Google has any problem with them, for real. If they have I'll go with AdBrite.

That girl is provocative!!!! OMG, seems to me we are back in Salem's times.

    sabrebIadeposted 14 years ago

Well Hypno, the ads were shut down on Friday, I've e-mailed them I think 3 times and gotten nothing from them yet.

Got tons of traffic to that sight over the weekend, now it's dropping as the news gets older.

I'm thinking about doing like you said, deleting the Hub and moving it to one of my blogs.
