What's that word?

You know when your mind totally blanks?  Yeah, I'm having one of those moments.  So, I'm looking for a word.  It means people who are following an event, watching a match, etc.  I think it starts with a P.  But maybe I'm crazy.  I got too much sun today (a rarity in Seattle).

It would fit into a sentence like this:

The _______________ following the game found it interesting.

Argh, like a pirate, why can't I think of the word?

      My guess would be patrons.

How about "patrons", as in "those that patronize an establishment or event"?

Yeah, but I was wrong about the P.  Definitely looking for "spectators" this time around.
