The word instinct is nothing but camouflage. Learned men use it as a scientific term to hide from ordinary people the fact that they don’t know the answer. If we call it instinct, it becomes science; if we call it the Holy Ghost, it becomes religion.
So called conservatives like instinct as original sin, and liberals like sociological manifestations as more affecting behavior. Original sin usually means cannot be changed and thus must be removed and sociology means possibility of reform.
I don't know that he had anything to do with the term 'instict'.
