In YOUR estimation, when it is okay to delete an answer from your questions? Do you delete an answer

when the answer is totally& aberrantly irrational & illogical in its premise &/or presents a basis of inverse logic at its worst? At what point do you delete an answer from your question and why?

Not just here, but anywhere I have a measure of control over the content, I do exercise that control. The best resource for this is the ability to approve a new answer or not approve it. Unapproved, it will never even show up. But if the only recourse is to delete an answer, I do that, as well. But only if the answer is irrelevant to the question or seems so poorly thought out that it contributes nothing to the thread. Trolls and unsolicited back link requests are in most cases also deleted.

I only delete answers that are blatant spam or a direct personal attack.  I think dissenting opinions are fine and should be encouraged, but some people take their opinions a little too far and it spirals into name calling and insults etc.  At that point, there's no real reason to keep those answers around.  I'll either delete or close the question when it starts to descend into chaos.

I just deleted an answer to one of my questions.  It came to me as spam and it also had nothing to do with my question.

    I've only deleted spam.
A person may answer a relationship question along the lines of:
"I was in the same position until I contacted Dr. blah blah and now I'm back with my ex!" And then they'll provide a link.
I've never deleted an answer simply because someone disagreed with me. Everyone is entitled to have their own opinions and beliefs.

As some others have said, in Questions and Answers I would probably only delete spam or gratuitously offensive answers.

On my hubs I feel it's my duty to maintain more control, and besides, it's a courtesy to reply to most comments. If the hub creates a wide ranging and passionate debate (that's only ever happened once so far on my hubs!) then I may wish to exercise some control - not to limit the range of views expressed, but to ensure the debate stays on topic, and doesn't degenerate into a slanging match between two or more contributors.

Fortunately however, on HubPages control isn't usually too necessary, as we aren't prone to the same level of troll-like behaviour that we see on some social networks or forums!! smile

I delete answers that are spam, or that have nothing to do with the original question. Other than that, people can be as asinine as they wish.

I have no problems with leaving answers that are illogical, or just plain stupid. If people want to leave those sorts of answers, I think they should stay up forever, as a monument to their stupidity.

I'm with you, Lisa. Leave it there so everyone can see it.  And don't send me a private apology. If you can say it publicly, then own up to it publicly.
