How did social programs in the United States created a high sense of entitlement among
the poor who come to expect such programs to keep them socioeconomically afloat? Do you believe that charities & social programs make the poor in the United States lazy, losing their incentive to better themselves because such charities & programs cushion them socioeconomically? Do you further contend that if the poor didn't have these charities & social programs, they see how hard being poor is, even using this as an incentive to improve themselves educationally & socioeconomically?
1. They are told that they have a right to be comfortable, a natural extension of a self esteem movement that says being validated emotionally is of the utmost importance. If you think you have the right to physically attack people who challenge your narrative, you think it is utterly immoral to be expected to work at a physically demanding job for 60 hours to have crappy housing and lousy food.
2. They are told that housing, food, healthcare are a right. If it is a right, there's no shame in not working or working only part time to collect federal benefits.
3. Liberals benefit when people depend on the state for critical needs. They thus don't eliminate the welfare cliff, where earning over X amount (part time at decent wages or minimum wage full time) costs you utilities, subsidized childcare, etc. You start to move up the ladder earning 10% more, you lose thousands in benefits, so you don't move up. It keeps people trapped in dependence, and the state knows that people who depend on it for necessities will vote for more state power and resources.

Do Americans have a sense of entitlement? With welfare, unemployment, new public healthcare and other social programs being provided by the government, are Americans feeling a sense of entitlement? Do some Americans feel that they are owed something just for being born here?

Conservatives Only- The Democratic Party in America is becoming very extreme, even radical & revolutionary in its political stance. They want a socialist agenda for America in terms of universal healthcare, & creating even more social programs which will further cripple America...

The budget deficits in California is forcing the elimination of many programs as a possible answer. Without any other forms of raising revenue are the additional taxes going to start just as the economy is waking up?http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.c … 027D28.DTL

What makes some people in the United States believe that they should be given free services, even going as far to expect others to foot THE BILL for such services? Have some American people become THAT ENTITLED?

Aside from the impact on people who fail in life and wouldn't have a government to help them out, are their any negatives to a society that offers no social programs (in my thoughts this would be except disability)?

Why are social programs (i.e. welfare, universal health & college) so controversial in the USA?Do you think it has anything to do with our diverse ethnic, cultural and religious ideas? Or is it something else?
