    Its probably one of those very old sayings which was probably mentioned in reply to someone’s carelessness as they dropped to much salt.  As it probably used to be expensive in those days and not as easily available as say, in today’s climate, where we can buy salt pretty much anywhere.

    I think personally many of these sayings where just a way of reminding or telling people, in an easily remembered format, like songs and stories carry the message throughout time.

    It's an old superstition.  It has something to do with salt at one time being a very rare  and valuable commodity and spilling it was damn expensive and thought to be a bad omen.

    Both answers are correct, yet throwing salt over your shoulder is a superstitious form of protection.
