Rings are worn on the ring finger. Why? How did this practise come about??
It was worn on the third finger of the left hand because ancient Romans thought that that finger was the only one to have a vein running straight to the heart. It was called the "vena amoris" or "vein of love."
All the fingers actually have veins running to the heart, but the tradition has continued.
I never knew this. Thank you for taking the time to answer.
I remember reading somewhere that the ring finger for marriage was worn on the right hand in distant past, but here in America we use the left hand. Today, however, a lot of people adore all their fingers with flashy jewels!
This practice has been going on for more than 1000 years now...
The concept behind it was to encase the heart of the bride with the ring of the groom. that's why they chose fourth finger of left hand (yes it's actually fourth, the little finger is our fifth)..because it was believed that a vein, vena amoris, carries blood from the ring finger to the heart...however it's not proven...but the tradition continued.
There is some really short and interesting information about all this at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_finger
