   Which of the Beatles do you think was the best songwriter was it Paul, John or George?

   Well, together John and Paul created masterpieces - there's no doubt about that - pop masterpieces. To try and choose one of these great musical talents is so difficult because both brought plenty to the table in terms of structure, melody and lyrics.
   
   I'll have to shy away from choosing the best but say that, considering melody, I think Paul was more tuneful but in regards to lyrics I find John perhaps more powerful.
   
   The song Yesterday for example seems more Paul. Norwegian Wood more John.
   
   George wrote soulful songs - While My Guitar Gently Weeps for example but wasn't as prolific. Then again Something is a classic ballad.....
   
   This debate could run and run!!

      Thank you Andrew for your great observations about each Beatle. I think you were right on the money with your answer. I am still trying to make up my mind. I think I am torn between Paul and George.

   My favourite is My Sweet Lord by George, even though he wasn't the most prolific. I feel that this song captures a depth that all of the other songs by the others, don't quite get.
   
   A good songwriter doesn't need to write many songs to get their inspiration across. Perhaps one or two incredible songs is enough.

      Thank you for your comment Electro-Denizen. Lately I have been listening to George Harrison's great hits and he has so many wonderful songs that I hadn't appreciated before. He was a great talent.

   I believe it was Paul as the duo progressed.  Lennon's great songs were on Hard Day's Night and Help, but Paul started getting much more sophisticated on later albums.  We see the changes start on Help with I've Just Seen A Face and Yesterday. You can't go wrong either way, so it might just be my personal bias toward McCartney's later work with Wings.

      Thank you CJ Kelly for your response. It does seem like Paul got more musically developed as the years progressed while John stuck to his rock and roll roots. I too lean toward Paul if it is between him and John. Between Paul or George I can't decide

   Paul a genius, and was a simpler man, easier to understand, but John was closer to my heart. I was devastated when he was murdered.
   
   George, or course, was lovely, not in the running for the best in my mind, but lovely.
   
   I loved them all, but if I have to choose, it would be John.

      Thank you Sherry for your perspective. I too love them all. They are all so talented. It was heart breaking when John died. Musically I lean toward Paul and George. I liked John's songs "Watching The Wheels" and "Imagine" they are classics.
