What are some tips you would give to someone looking to start their own rock band?

Do you do cover only - or write you own songs?
For live audience - other than talent and hard work - gotta have a schtick.
Most of the rock bands has bad vocalist and vocals... so practice on it. because if rock music + good vocalist it becomes "AWESOME"
Either be unique, or be something that you know will sell: either one can make you financially successful. Whichever path you choose (and you must know and love yourself), you must do as advocated by colyn, and rehearse. Practice. It doesn't hurt to practice in front of a gathering of friends (and it can score points for you), but there's no substitute for serious sessions "in the woodshed."

Get a sexy girl to be your lead singer and come up with a short but cool name.
First, you have to be really sure that it is rock music that you want to do. Next, you have to look for members who are skillful in their own craft. If you want to start a band and take it on a next level, you have to invite good instrumentalists and an experienced or awesome lead vocalist to be part of your project band. Then try to 'glue' yourselves together by doing more jams or band sessions or spending quality time together. You can do it by having a night out or drinking session or just by playing music together. As a rock vocalist and artist, my band started out with nothing. But because we are composed of five unique and passionate individuals who are determined to make a name for ourselves, we managed to take one step at time to take our music to the next level.
