For a good story telling lyric, I would have to say "The Winner Takes It All" by ABBA.

It is just a very simple song, telling the story of a relationship breaking down. Both people hurt but they are not the ones to make the decisions which will end the relationship.

It actually reminds me of a very happy time. My new fiancee, now wife, and I had just got engaged and were sat watching the moon set over the sea. The car radio was on and this song began to play.

I believe what is going on in our life affects how well a song resonates with us. Other times a song can take us back to a happy or sad time. Music can make you laugh, cry, dance, feel sexy, get in a romantic mood, reflect on the past, or motivate one push through dark days. This problaby explains why our favorite song tends to change.
Some of mine are as follows

“Someone like you” by Van Morrison is about finally finding true love

“Neither one of us” by Gladys Knight & The Pips – Realizing a relationship is over

“I don’t wanna fight no more” by Tina Turner – Also about ending relationships

“The World’s Greatest” by R. Kelly is a great affirmation song for facing challenges.

“Empire State of Mind” Jay-Z and Alicia Keys (a good motivation song)

“U Saved Me” – Another R. Kelly song is good for recalling one’s blessings

There are numerous great dance songs, smooth jazz, funk, soul ,rock & roll....etc Again it all comes back to what mood you are in at the time.

"Dark as a Dungeon" by Merle Travis.

It's eloquently written, with admonitions to "seek not your fortune in the dark dreary mine" and the concession that, as Travis said in the spoken introduction, "it's a habit" for men to follow their fathers and grandfathers and great-grandfathers into the job:  "Like a fiend with his dope and a drunkard his wine a man will have lust for the lure of the mine."

Well, I was gonna say "Good Morning Starshine" because of the very long passage of, "Oobee Doobie Wabba, Oobee Doobie Dabba," but my only rationale was the image I got of somebody actually writing that line.

As for real, memorable lyrics - "Nobody Does it Better," "The Sweetest Thing (I've ever known is living you),"  "Something Good" (from The Sound of Music) and I agree with Bretsuki that "The Winner Takes It All" is great.
