Two of my top scary movies are Exorcist (agree with another user; it's based on a true story) and the Shining. Awesome movies with no blood and crazy special effects!
Ram Gopal Verma (don't blame u if you don't know who he is)threw an open challenge for anyone with a strong heart to view his last horror film-Phoonkh in the late night show alone with no one else in the theater and if he came out alive he would be entitled to take home a lakh rupees(Indian currency).
Maybe you cud laugh your way thru it since you don't understand the lingo but to date I did not find anyone who could take up the challenge or better still walk away with the prize money.Mind you a lakh is no small amount really.
I would have to say my favorite scary movies are "The Shining" and the original "Halloween"
However, I watched "Children of the Corn" as a child and have never been the same. I have no idea if it's actually scary of if I just saw it waaaaay too young. I seriously doubt I will ever watch it again to find out!
I'm determined to jump on some of these movies and review them for people.. They will be coming soon.
I already have a request for Stephen King's The Mist, so I'll just add some of these to my pending Hubs.
If there's a horror movie you'd like to know more about, I will write a Hub for you! Just contact me. My brain has an enormous archive of horror movies it's seen haha.. really though.
My last Hub was about the Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity's budgets compared! Check it out!

Honestly, if you found Jaws FUNNY, then it might be REALLY tough to find a movie that scares you...
Here's a list of movies that have scared me on SOME level:
Planet of the Apes
Eraserhead
Cannibal Holocaust
The Mist
Halloween (1978)
The Blair Witch Project
Jaws
The Shining
The Thing (1982)
Quarantine
any of Romero's Living Dead films as well as the 90s remake of Night
Fire in the Sky
Cloverfield (yeah, i'm a bit of a sucker for "cant see what's after you" stuff)
but I watch most of my movies late at night, with all the lights off, by myself...so it can be scarier than in the middle of the day with a group of friends...
Supposedly scarey movies don't scare me anymore - the last movie I saw that scared me was when I was 9 and saw The Tarantula - an old black&white about a giant marauding tarantula. I'll never forget the image of a lady in a negligee hanging onto one of the spider's hairy legs as it was literally walking through the ceiling of her house and there was this chandelier swaying - I was under the seat hiding for the rest of that movies. If you ever do find a movie that scares you and you like the way it feels - don't go back to see it again because they never scare you twice, I believe.
Oh, also those Alcoa Presents TV shows used ta get me purty good!
I have heard that Paranormal Activity in theaters now is pretty frightening....but like you, I have yet to find one that is hair raising. I usually laugh.
Hmmm...
Try watching "Shutter." The Asian version and not the American one.
You can also try watching "Audition." But I think it's more disgusting than scary.
The original 'Jaws' always scares the crap out of me! All the sequels sucked though. 'Arachnophobia' is another one cause I hate spiders, plus that one has a lot of comedy too.
If your scared of any type of bug or animal (Cujo) then try those kinds of films, good luck on your scary journey.
Oh, 'Ghost Hunters' can be scary sometimes too.
According to my movies experience not only horror movies scare you. Another movie like thriller and mysteries movies also able to scares any one if the movies starring able to create a great suspense.
Last weekend, I saw a great Mysteries movie "Restitution Road" on Amazon Prime. What a brilliant suspense and what a twist!!!! Trust me; I feel that this is one of those movies that you find to scares you.

sleep with the lights on, made you go into your subconscious religious recesses, or asked a friend or relative to stay with you to allay your fears?

Hehehe...I hear ya. I love horror movies, I used to watch them by myself all the time, but depending on the movie, I WOULD make sure all the doors were locked! Nowadays....I can't remember the last time I was actually alone. Hmm. That kinda sucks.
