In recent news, China is officially banning any and all films that feature the story point of time travel.  No, this is not a joke, as I'm being very serious.  Time travel films are officially banned in China for the following reasons mentioned in this statement from comingsoon.net

Here's the official word from China's State Administration for Radio, Film and Television:

"The producers and writers are treating the serious history in a frivolous way, which should by no means be encouraged anymore."

They “casually make up myths, have monstrous and weird plots, use absurd tactics, and even promote feudalism, superstition, fatalism and reincarnation.”

Anyways, what are you're thoughts on this?  Do you think China is justified in doing this?  Or, do you think they're over reacting here?  Please, discuss.

Incredible I'd say.  That means they'll be banning all time favourites like Dr Who, Quantum Leap and Back to the Future!

It's like they want to make up people's minds about time travelling, myths of going back in time and putting it in today's context!  That's bizarre!

Conspiracy Theory:  Maybe they don't want their citizens thinking about it because their government is trying to attempt it.   wink

I tried to check this but found no valid reference to any statement - and my missus is watching a Chinese TV series that is about a woman who goes back in time - so go figure.

really?  wow, i guess who ever wrote that piece on comingsoon.net must've gotten it wrong then if that's the case.

It does not mean that there is not some kind of statement - but generally these are issued as guidelines much as we see in the west in regard to the degrees of sexuality etc that should be shown.

If there is such a statement, which I have yet to find any source for, I guess it would be linked to the way that the past is what is written now, not what actually happened - in every case, every country and even in our our own personal histories.

The idea that the history we know is remotely right is almost laughable, most people don't even know their own history of their own lives - and if they do that is not what they tell us.

They are probably worried that their people might find out that their beloved Mao killed millions of his own people.

Authorities are afraid that if a character goes back to the 1500s, viewers might say "Hay, Medical England looks a hell of a lot like my village"

My mate worked out in China teaching college students. He was almost sacked when he refused to teach the kids that chinese people were decended from a different species from the homo group than all other humans. He was an anthrapologist by training so they bombarded him with "papers" from really dodgy "Doctorr's" all saying the same thing. It was absolute BS so he still refused and the got the local Communist party involved. Eventually the school backed down and he was taken off that particular lecture.

    Tell me that isn't weird!

Presumably - he was left baffled. He still lives there, loves the place. It's presumably because they want a clear distinction between the "master race" and the others.

Sounds like a religion rather than a government.
Basically they are saying that being imaginative and creative is not acceptable in their "my-way-or-the-highway" country.

I think it stinks. It's a book-burning mentality. Nothing new here.

Ordinarily I would say this is a wind up. You can't tell people how to think, what to watch, what to read or have that much control over them. It treats everyone like children. And doesn't come with any intent of trust behind it.

Another thing, Sci-fi, Fantasy and Time Travel ideas end up expanding people's minds and giving them ideas. Maybe someone does not want that. Discouraging big ideas perhaps?

I really can't help but laugh about this one!!!
And quite frankly, if China wants to globally humiliate themselves at a time when they are desparate to be taken seriously in the world, why should we stand in their way? If we do, we could only help them look credible.

Well actually China's government says it is disrespectful to Chairman Mao and it comes at a time when Communist rule will be celebrating it's 90th anniversary of rule.  Chinese government officials don't want citizens to see what happened in the past in China.  I guess, to them the only history should start when Communism took over and created the ideal little world they try to portray to their citizens.  China likes to make its citizens believe they (China) invented Everything.  Granted they did invent a lot but not everything.

Sorry - but about everything is wrong here - starting with the age - it is 62 years old later this year.

History is taught very well in all the schools and they are very proud of their long history.

And today I showed a time-travel movie in my class that I downloaded from a Chinese website - and my missus is in the middle of a popular tv series about a girl who goes back in time to the Tang dynasty.

So the OP's information  is a crock of crap, the posts are misinformed and apart from the post about the origin of the species not one word that is informed in any way.

@Superwags says he refused to teach the kids that chinese people were decended from a different species from the homo group than all other humans. He was an anthrapologist by training so they bombarded him with "papers" from really dodgy "Doctorr's" all saying the same thing. It was absolute BS so he still refused and the got the local Communist party involved. Eventually the school backed down and he was taken off that particular lecture.

This is a common racist slant on the origins of humanity and was used extensively by (I believe) South African 'dodgy docors' to separate black people from white people - when that racist crap was debunked so was the myth of Asian peoples origins.

So your 'mate' was teaching racist crap and deserved to be booted.  I note that the ever-polite Chinese just took him off that 'course' and the issue then arises why was he teaching against what the school wanted in the first place ?  does he think he is in some way better than his hosts?  try teaching that crap in a western Uni against the wishes of the heads of department.

My thoughts are that Doctor Who had better not wind up having to go to Hong Kong for any reason or we could inadvertantly launch World War three.
