My ultimate is The Shining.  The rest would be The Changeling, Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist and The Omen.  Happy Halloween!

Scary movies are my absolute favorite!! How to pick just 5?

    In no particular order:

    1. The Descent--terrifying!
    2. The Omen--still one of the best 30 years later.
    3. Dawn of the Dead--original and remake--can both count as one?
    4. Devil's Backbone--Spanish movie, but creepy even when being read.
    5. 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later--again, can these count as one?

Nosferatu is definitely one of my faves as well (I just didn't want to duplicate you)--have you seen Shadow of the Vampire?

No, I haven't seen it.  Is that the "making of" film based on Nosferatu?

Also, you have excellent taste in horror.  smile

Yes, exactly--it's John Malkovich as Murnau and Willem Dafoe as Max Schreck--who is very, very serious about his vampire role...it's quite good.
I'm going to have to check out the 1920s Phantom of the Opera--never seen it!

The 1920s Phantom is considered the scariest film version of POTO to date.  The unmasking scene is consider still to be unsurpassed and, when you see it, I'm sure you'll know why.  It's a little bit tough to find, but I wish you luck!  smile

I prrobably shouldn't respond to this becaue I've never seen any of these and don't care to. The only scary movie I ever saw at a theater was "Psycho" when I was about15 - I dunno, have to look that up. But I spent most of the movie with my hands over my eyes.
