New Summer TV Shows 2012

Updated on March 31, 2013

The Best New Summer TV Shows 2012

It's that time of year again where the days are getting longer and the nights are getting shorter. Although most of us will be spending more time outside, we still love to curl up in front of the TV and watch our favorite shows and perhaps a few new ones to add to our routine.

There are a number of new summer TV shows in 2012. Some will be great, some will be terrible and some will fall in between.

For those who don't want to waste their time, here's a guide to which new TV series are set to be hot in the summer of 2012 and which are likely to not do so well.

This guide will cover new TV shows airing from April to July 2012.

Air Date: 5th April 2012

Network: NBC

Synopsis: If you love lawyer type dramas then Scandal is for you. Olivia Pope, played by Kerry Washington, is a lawyer on a mission. Her and her team of Associates take care of the problems of the rich and famous.

Everyone knows of Olivia Pope and she is the person to go to when in trouble. No problem is too big for Olivia to deal with. As long as you think you can pass her "gut instinct" then you are sure to get her help.

On the other hand, Olivia is in love with the President of the United States of America and he's married. Olivia does her best to fight it, but as the ex-communications director at the White House, she;s finding it difficult to get away from her past.

If you are looking for a legal drama with spunk and lots of rule breaking, then the Scandal TV Show could be the new TV series for you. I think you'll also be surprised at how many of the Scandal cast you actually recognize.

For those that are huge Grey's Anatomy fans, you'll be happy to find out this is also a Shonda Rhimes project.

Air Date: April 8th 2012

Network: Lifetime

Synopsis: Jennifer Love Hewitt is starring in The Client List TV show and is a reprise of her role from the movie of the same name, which was released in 2010. However, she is playing a different character and the story is a bit different.

What you really need to know is she plays a character called Riley Parks. Her husband has left her and she has to find a way to make a living to continue to pay the mortgage and look after her kids. She decides to go and work in a massage parlour.

Cybill Shepard plays the role of Riley's mother and expect there to be raunchy scenes, but also some humour. In some ways this actually reminds me of Weeds in that Nancy Botwin's husband died and she became a drug dealer to make ends meet. Riley has chosen a different path to meet the same ends.

Don't Trust the B- In Apartment 23

Air Date: April 11th 2012

Network: FOX

Synopsis: Don't Trust the B- in Apartment 23 is a new comedy on FOX. It starts off with a career girl who's living life according to her life plan. She's on the path she's always anticipated and she's engaged to be married.

Sweet, kind hearted June is transferred to New York and is put up in a company owned apartment. When she starts her first day, her life quickly unravels. June is soon homeless and almost penniless when her companies assets are frozen due to fraud. June takes it on her shoulders to continue on in the hopes of getting a new job and not disappointing her folks. Her first priority is to find somewhere to live...

June looks at the roommate wanted ads in the paper and quickly meets every strange and quirky person in New York. When she finally meets Chloe she thinks she's hit the jackpot. Chloe is nice and supposedly normal. June gives Chloe all the money she has left for the rent and the security deposit. However, June comes to realize Chloe has a dark side.

Chloe has a plan to get her apartment all to herself. Now that she has June's money she'll do anything to get rid of June. She even calls in the help of her best friend James Van Der Beek, who plays himself in this comedy.

June's life will get worse long before it gets better, depending on the lengths Chloe is willing to go in Don't Trust the B- in Apartment 23.

Air Date: April 15th 2012

Network: CBS

Synopsis: Just what everyone was looking for - another cop drama. You'll probably be wondering what makes this cop drama different from all the other cop dramas. Well there are a number of things that make this cop drama worth watching.

In a normal law enforcement type TV show there would be one rookie with an experienced officer. In NYC 22 there are a whole bunch of rookies, but the show tends to focus on 6 rookies in particular.

Another difference is the show is funny in parts and is very real in some senses. Although you would expect it to be funny as Adam Goldberg is one of the rookies.

Also, some of the things these rookies get up to is beyond belief. It really makes you wonder what training they went through to become rookies. Was there any real training? Mostly, I feel sorry for the experienced officers having to babysit these guys.

Air Date: April 22nd HBO

Network: HBO

Synopsis: Veep is set in Washington in the White House and is all about the Vice President of the United States, who is a woman. Vice President Selina Meyer, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus is inexperienced and is surrounded by a team of incompetent political types.

Just when she thinks she can handle the spotlight, she's suddenly told she can't do what she wants to do or say what she planned to say.

This is a very satirical look at American politics and is shot in the same style as The Thick of It and In The Loop.

Expect a lot of swearing and situational comedy. Expect Julia Louis Dreyfus to be the pushy woman she is used to playing, such as her previous roles in Seinfeld and in Old Christine.

This is a comedy show so it's fair to say you'll either love Veep or hate you'll hate it.

The Return of Dallas

Hedging Your Bets
Hedging Your Bets

Watch the first season of the new Dallas TV show from TNT

Air Date: June 13th 2012

Network: TNT

Synopsis: Dallas will return with a double episode on the 13th of June 2012.

Many fans will be wondering if this is a reboot or a continuation of the original Dallas. Well it's more of a continuation. Dallas has managed this by picking the show up 20 years after the last episode. The kids have grown up and are now taking the reigns of the Ewing empire.

There will be a smooth transition from the old Dallas to the new glossy Dallas by keeping the show in the same location. The film is still being set on the Southfork Ranch in Texas. A number of the original Dallas cast are returning to reprise their roles as the wealthy and elite of Dallas.

The Dallas TV show was always about the power struggle between the Ewings and it looks like that will continue to be the case moving forward.

However, you don't need to be a die hard Dallas fan to enjoy the new Dallas series. There's plenty for the new generation to sink their teeth into. Expect lots of good looking people and a fair number of raunchy scenes.

For a show that ran for over 14 seasons, it's easy to see why they have brought it back. TNT are hoping the return of Dallas will be a success for them and it is one of the most anticipated new TV shows airing this summer.

Air Date: July 9th 2012

Network: TNT

Synopsis: Every wondered what it would be like if Sherlock Holmes worked in Chicago and had a few screws loose? Well that's pretty much the concept behind Perception. Think of the main character Dr. Daniel Pierce as a modern day Holmes that suffers from schizophrenia and isn't taking any medication. He has hallucinations and doesn't really understand what's real and what's imagined, but that's ok because that's what he teaches on campus.

Daniel gets invited by a former student to help solve unsolvable FBI crimes. Daniel uses these extra people in his head to crack the cases and find the criminals. Of course Daniel doesn't do this by himself and has a babysitter who helps him with what's what.

If you're a fan of quirky cop procedurals and love Eric McCormack, then you'll love the new Perception TV show.

More New Summer TV Shows 2012

Girls TV Series on HBO (April 15th 2012) - Comedy series about some 20 something girls that haven't quite figured out what they are going to do with their lives. I fail to see how this comedy can last. It also looks awkward and cringe worthy at moments.

Best Friends Forever on NBC (April 4th 2012) - Comedy series about a girl who is getting a divorce and has to move back in with her best friend, much to the disappointment of her best friend's boyfriend.

Magic City on Starz (April 20th 2012) - If you were looking for a Casino type TV show then you may have found it in Magic City. Expect this TV show to be gritty and show the harsh underworld of Miami when it was just getting off the ground as the place to be a gambler.

Common Law on the USA Network (May 11th 2012) - Comedy cop drama following 2 LA police homicide detectives. Michael Ealy and Warren Kole play the detectives that are the best in the department, but fail to work alongside each other without bickering which causes lots of problems. To resolve the issues they are sent to couples therapy.

Men At Work on TBS (May 24th 2012) - 4 guys working together at a magazine company are co0workers as well as friends. When Milo gets dumped by his girlfriend the guys come together to work on their relationships.

There are lots of new summer TV shows coming out in 2012. Hopefully you'll be able to find something worth watching this summer. If you can't find anything you are looking for then you could always try new TV shows that came out earlier in the year.
