How do you apply your teaching skills with your own children at home?
What an awesome question! I consider the fact that I have a teaching degree incidental except for the wisdom and experience it gave me to enrich my children's lives. I went to college for education in the 80's when it was whole language, experience based learning from which we are light years away, currently. I am thankful for the type education I received because it has helped me encourage my kids to be "whole" learners. We focus on what we want to know- and the reading, writing, expressing flows naturally from that. At school now it all about little fragments of information to retain for "THE TEST". My kids all read early and are all very curious learners. As pre-schoolers, play-doh, music and art activities kept their hands busy and their creative juices flowing. I am less than creative so it is a delight that I was able to facilitate their creativity.
We still read together and separately, although more separately as they grow. I am proud of how intelligent my kids are and how they've taken advantage of their talents. Providing materials, conversation and encouragement is my main contribution to my children's learning.
With my three children born one after another in their early years I have always put in place strict routine and learning sessions throughout the day, when we learnt about history, nature and literature....When they have been little they used to complain, now in their young adult years they appreciate their first building blocks to the life long learning....
Just remember, as a mom, you're already your child's first teacher. Follow your instincts.

Do grandparents love their grandchildren more than their own children?I have heard some grandparents say that they love their grandchildren more. Is it because they have forgotten how much they used to love their own children?
