how can i get my children (ages 12, 10, and 4) to stop lying to me?

despite the many hours and lectures i have spent talking to them about the detriments of lying.  my husband and his family lie so much about almost everything.  Is lying it genetic?

I don't think it's genetic.  It's learned behavior.  What I did with my five; when I knew they were lying I went along with the lie.  To the point of embarrassment.  I retold their lie to everyone I came in contact with in their presence.  I didn't preach or scold, well, I did at first but realized it wasn't working.  They soon learned if you lie, it's gonna get broadcast.

They lie because they are scared of being punished or maybe because they are ashamed of the truth and the 4 year old is getting it from the others so tell them you love them more and tell them why you punish them and tell them how much you love them and why lying is bad.

For every lie they tell, take away something they value and don't return it.
