As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I remember I wanted to be a vet, I loved animals. I still do love animals, but I don't think I could ever really be a vet, or a doctor of any sorts, just not my cup of tea.
But I would love to hear your answers.
I wanted to be a pilot. After my dad passed away when I was 7, a friend of the family took me up in a small plane and I loved it.
I wanted to be many things: architect, teacher, public speaker, missionary, author, and creative designer. I have never become just one of those, but have done them all in some form or another throughout my life. I have been a computer tutor and taught at summer camps; I did public speaking at retreats and special groups; I have designed many things from clothes to furniture; I was an office worker for a mission organization; I did the design & layout for a published book; now I'm fulfilling some of my dream of writing. I always said I was a "jack-of-all-trades" but master of none.
Hmmm...that's a tough one. At age 62, I'm still trying to come up with an answer to that. I'm leaning towards "writer," however.... ;-)
As a kid, I went through the usual little-girl phase of nurse, and as I grew older, realized I don't have it in me to stab anyone with a needle, hating needles as much as I do.
Ditto for doctor of any kind, for the same reason--although in my era, a female doctor or veterinarian was nearly unheard of.
Since I grew up playing 'grease monkey' helping my father tinker with the car and make things, I wanted to take auto shop in high school, but was not allowed for no better reason than being female. (Yep--that was before the "women's lib" movement.)
I sucked at math, so any profession requiring higher math was out. Even though I find chemistry and physics fascinating, I don't have the math background for either.
So, here I sit, in the autumn of my life, still trying to decide upon my life's career. So, I focus on enjoying life, and like "FloBe," I consider myself a "Jill of all trades;" master of very few. I live by the line "Carpe Diem," (seize the day), and simply do one day at a time.
Cheers!
I only had and still have the same wish for my future: I want to be happy. so far I´m doing a good job, I think.
I´ve been promoted a few times: got married, given birth....
and I have been working in tourism since I was 15 ;-)
I wanted to be rich. I wanted to be famous. And I wanted to be a better parent than mine were to me...Oh, my bad, you meant what JOB did I want to do...? lol
I wanted to be an over the road truck driver. Hauling freight and pretty girls around in my 18 wheeler. King of the road, and have a running buddy like Burt Reynolds with a fast car. Right after Smokey and the Bandit hit theaters.
My parents sent me for one summer to ride with a trucker friend hauling tractors to Mississippi from Michigan. OOPS ! Worked in reverse, made me want to see the entire country from the cab of my own truck. Singing songs by Red Sovine (Teddy Bear) and Jerry Reed.
I never went after that dream. I grew up back when the first big oil "crisis" hit. People were lining up for blocks to get gasoline just to drive their cars. Then and there I decided I wanted nothing to do with paying all that money for gas just to make a living.
Today I just want to be comfortable. I know still not a job title but after all these years of working my butt off, I really want to go back to my original answer. I wanna be rich, then when I wear a suit and people will think I am working, instead of asking "Who Died ?"...LOL
First it was a doctor.. and then a writer [which I am now]!!
I wanted to be a bus driver like my daddy......he was my biggest role model.....than I changed my mind when I found out that he was a liar!.....from then on I am just a lost cause taking up room on this planet earth!
I thought I wanted to be a teacher from the time I started school until about half way through high school. Not sure what made me change my mind, but I don't think I would have been very good in front of a room full of kids, so I'm glad I did.
As a kid? I don't remember. Probably a doctor. As a teenager I wanted to invent a flat screen TV and wanted to be an electronics engineer.
I also wanted to be a Vet, but the years in college scared the beegeebees out of me. I also wanted to be a nurse but them children came along and life happened. In a way I have become the vet and the nurse and a teacher and a great mother which is everything rolled into one. I raised many small animals including goats, chickens, ducks, rabbits, cats, dogs, mice and hampsters along the way and of course two beautiful independent daughters who are grown and on their own now.
Police Officer, Astronaut, and Writer.
Kinda close on the 1st one - I work security
Don't think I have what it takes to go to outer space.
And I am a writer.
2 out of 3 isn't bad.
As a child I was deeply touched by poverty around me and thought that if the right politician comes then; all things could change thus, with that belief, I wanted to get into politics and get things actually done.
But with time my ideas changed and I believe that charity begins from home so, now opt for doing somthing low key which could bring a change in the society that I live in..
I wanted to be an artist. My parents didn't think that was a proper job! I decided I'd be a poet. That wasn't proper either. So! I got a 'proper' job.
Now! my day job is working on a small banana plantation. Guess they now think an artist in the family would be a plus. But, hey, I get a lot of bananas for free:)
I write and paint a little too. Never say never.
First a chef. Then an author. Then a doctor for an insane asylum. Now I want to be an author AND an Abnormal Phychologist.

What did you want to be as a child when you "grew up". I wanted to be an astronaut...Petenali asked "What Non-Fiction book have you read that has changed your life" and it made me think of my childhood and how I devoured any book about space and the universe and so longed...

What did you want to be when you grew up? Did your wish come true or are you still "growing up"?It is true we have great plans for our careers and our future in general and then life happens. As an adult is there something you still want to be when you grow up?
