What age is too young for kids to join facebook?

Should parents allow their kids to join facebook before entering high school? If so, should they be trusting facebook's privacy settings in helping them stay safe?

Facebook expressly prohibits anyone under the age of 14 from joining facebook. Even 14 is a little young when considering that most 10 year olds know how to make a "parent friendly" profile AND a secret profile just for their friends. Personally, I've seen too much trouble come about from youngsters using facebook before they are mature enough to understand how it can affect their lives. 14 is young enough IMHO.

Thanks and appreciate your feedback. Discussed this with both of my sisters and we all agreed that even 14 is not quite old enough for joining a widely used social media as FB.

Definitely. I'm glad to see you're reaching out too. The topic isn't often discussed because many parents are anxious to admit they don't know what to do. Heck, I won't even let my 16 year old nephew friend me on fb, cause I'm totally uncensored, lol

Good point on your last comment... even family members can be a surprisingly negative influence on kids without them even realizing it! Younger kids can see how their siblings, cousins, etc.. behave on FB and may mimic them because its "cool"...

I wouldn't let my kid get a myspace account until he was almost 16. There was no facebook at the time. He bugged me about starting his own page for a couple of years, but I wouldn't let him. I preferred he went outside and skateboarded or did something recreational. Under 15 or 16 is just too young to be getting all involved in a virtual "social" life... not to mention a little bit risky to naive youngsters...

Completely agree. FB can be like "television" with way too many inappropriate ads, posts, and comments being swung around so easily for kids to become influenced with.
