Thanks Cagsil...I'm enjoying this thread! Small world isn't it?
I was born and bred the US. Grew up in New York - supposedly the the mother of all melting pots, although I understand that term is now politically incorrect.
My parents were also born in NYC, but my paternal grandparents arrived in the 1880's from Hungary and my maternal grandparents came from Russia.
I have cousins who did extensive research into the family history so I did learn about my great grandparent's fascinating life stories. That was a gift.
I wasn't aware "melting pot" was politically incorrect these days. I can't keep up. I may just choose to be deliberatley offensive... it seems easier than being politically conscientious and more interesting than being accidentally offensive. lol.
Some think its a new "no-no" word because it implies that immigrants need to "melt" into the Great American Culture and in doing so must dilute their "bad" characteristics.
My grandparents on my mother's side came from London. My great grandparents on my father's side also came from London. They came from the working class. On my father's side they were Milkos meaning they delivered milk of a morning for work. My grandfather on my mother's side married a barmaid.
I really don't have any idea what grandfather did in England but when he came out to Australia he was the original Pommy Jackaroo. In American he was an Australian cowboy. Women nowadays who have picked up the trade are called Jillaroos. Anyway, he did that work in a small town in the heart of Queensland. He must have been good with a horse to even be considered for such a job. Either that or he learned fast. When WW1 broke out he had the choice of going back to England and signing up or remain with his Aussie mates and join the Light Horse. He joined the Light Horse. He was badly wounded in France and was not expected to live. He was sent to a hospital in England. He pulled through, married the English barmaid, my grandmother, and came back to Australia. He thought Queensland would be too hot a place to settle so they settled in Sydney, NSW.
My family on both sides have had men in uniform during both world wars. My granddad on my father's sign was involved in the building of a local church. So you see, my family over the years has make a pretty good investment in being Australian and so I do consider myself Australian above all else though I respect my family's British background.
I'm a naturalized American of Asian descent. Not one of the Big 3 but the Southeast Asia region.
I haven't lived up to successful "model minority" role that most Asian Americans are known to be able to do in the States.
I'm a United States-ian, which sounds funny and is probably why people from the United States started coining the phrase 'American' (which as we all know is 2 continents and not a nationality).
I'm American born in Alaska. American Indian/German from one side and Irish/"heinz 57" from the other.
I was born in the UK of Polish parents. My official nationality is British. I married a Croat and lived in Zagreb for five years, where my elder daughter was born. She has dual British/Croatian nationality.
I never felt a link to any particular nation. Then I moved to Wales. Wales adopted me and made me feel I finally have roots. Therefore, although I am not Welsh by genes, I now consider myself to be Welsh by choice.
Cymru am byth! (Wales forever)
I enjoyed that story, you should flesh it out some more and christen it a hub!
yes CAGS< you should make this a hub, I am requesting, differentiate ethnicity, sanguine, nationality, citizenship etc, this is a brilliant post and idea too
Okay Moms side Polish my grandparents came over in 1910 (but recently I found out the their parents came to Poland from Finland, so I guess I'm actually Finish) My Fathers side I am French-Canadian and Native American.
Both sides 4th generation Irish. Father side Catholics, and mother side Protestant. The only cut in line is that my great grandmother on my dad side was Blackfoot Indian.
From all the work on genealogy my dad did, I suppose I'm 100% American/European mongrel.
I am Czech, my mother is Czech, my father is italian. If I could I would love to be British, as that is a place I supposed to born. Someone just made mystake and ruined my life forever. lol
I am also part Skypeople but the U.S. Census is yet to recognize extra-planetary aliens so there's that then.

Although her chances of winning is next to nothing (I'd rather vote for a sock puppet), but as a worse case senereo, I would tour Canada and Europe for four years and try not to stick out as an American due to embarrasment (very hard to do). It was bad enough traveling to Canada while Bush was in...

This is so much hogwash that's going on in America, perpetuated by the Leftist idealogues who want to shove the Bible into a mudhole along with the Christians. They say Christianity (they label it "religion") is "separate" from State policies, yet they allow a Muslim Imam to have...
