Since I work nights, what are some good, healthy snacks that I can have?
I find myself eating and drinking all the wrong things just to stay awake and alert. Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.
It's hard choosing the right things but I would say fruit and protein shakes. If you have protein, it fills you up where you don't fell hungry anymore. Don't have large meals, just snack every couple hours. Fruit, nuts, yogurt, etc.
Eat small, light meals at lunch and break times such as a salad and low fat yogurt, nuts and fruit. Choose lean proteins and low carb foods and avoid foods high in sugar and salt. Pack a healthy lunch and take it to work.
fast, easy, healthy snack ideas:
~ can of chickpeas with a sprinkle of garlic seasoning (if you don't have time or equipment to open the can and drain the chickpeas there you can do that beforehand and keep this simple snack in plastic tupperware.)
~ hummus dip with baby carrots and celery sticks - you can make your own low fat hummus dip by blending chickpeas, water, and your choice of seasoning in a blender or just buy premade low-fat hummus.
~ small organic dry-farmed tomatoes make a yummy snack
~ fruit like grapes, cherries, peaches, an apple, pear, or banana are easy to pack; just make sure they're ripe
~ you can make a cold pasta salad or a cold bean salad and keep it in tupperware. Just have a spoon, fork, or spork ready to eat it.
~ you can pack a salad in tupperware although you'll want to keep it somewhere cool.
~ popcorn plain or with a healthy topping like nutritional yeast can be a healthy snack.
~ if you're making sure to eat something filling and healthy for your regular meals, you won't be that hungry later on.
Good luck!
Hummus is AWESOME! I'd have never thought about taking it to work. I like mine with garlic pita chips.
Nuts (especially almonds), fresh vegetables and fruit are all good for energy. Granola and granola bars are awesome and easy to transport. Buy them with low sugar and nuts or dried fruit, or make them yourself. The best thing to drink, obviously, is water. And lots of it. A lot of people get dehydrated from drinking beverages with caffeine, which is a diuretic.
I find a great cold smoothly carrots oranges and lots of Ice pick you right up. be prepared to have a second.
