In my family it was expected to for every one to learn the basics of sewing, meaning buttons, zippers, and patch work for when things got wholes in them. Now my Aunt is a retired wedding dress maker, my mom is a hard core quilter, and I'm into making costumes and my own designs. I love sewing its a creative outlet for my soul plus I can see my designs go from my head, to paper, to the real deal.
I wish I could sew. I tried to make track-suit pants and they ended up as knicker bockers (peddle-pushers)...they just kept getting shorter some-how.
Sometimes I think sewing is a lost art. I learned to sew when I was 8, worked as a couturier cutter in high school, and went to design school. All of this training is useful when costuming and making one of a kind girl dresses.
I know what you mean Trinity, I started sewing at 6 years old and still love it to this day. And yes, sewing is somewhat a lost art, but one of my missions in life to to try and bring it back alive again. Just take one stitch at a time!
Learning to sew in my family meant that a girl didn't grow up properly unless she knew how to cut a pattern, fit a dress, and also alter clothes that needed to be made larger or smaller...these alterations were to accommodate differences in size, but were also for the kids in the family, making hand-me-downs re-tailored for fit and fashion.
Trinity26, I adore where you are in your mind and practice about sewing. It's been a long time since I've tailored a suit or fashioned a ball gown. I miss the smell of fabric off a bolt.
You go, girl!
I started out as a sculptor but didn't have room in my small apartments so I switched to sculpted wall hangings. Fabric is a wonderful and challenging medium. Good for you.
I sewed alot of my daughter's clothes when she was little, made all of my curtains and even maternity clothes for myself. These days I only have had time to make pillow covers for my throw pillows. I miss being creative with fabric.
I learnt to sew when I was young too, and I can knit, crochet, upholster furniture, create soft furnishings, embroider by hand or machine and patchwork. Oh and I can cut my own patterns. If they're dying out then it's because we don't pass them on. I know someone will say young people are not interested, but you can spark their interest, by finding how it links to their current life.
I started sewing since before I can remember. Thanks to my grandmother. There were twenty of us grandchildren and I was the only one who was interested. So I agree it is a dying art. It amazes me how simple heming for pants or sewing up ripped seems is so foreign for some folks. I get asked all the time by family and friends to fix their clothing. I love appliqued quilts or any quilts for that matter. Thank God for sewing, it keeps me sane.

If making money wasn't an option on HubPages, would you still write for this site...No matter if you make pennies a day or dollars. This question isn't about how much money a hubber makes. I'm just curious how many hubbers would still hub if they weren't earning money for the pub or to get some...

When did you start to form an idea of who you were?I've always been a pretty introspective person, so I started to form my own coherent self-identity pretty young. My older brother, on the other hand, spent so much time living up to our parents' expectations that I don't think he even tried to find...
