A June 15th PPP poll found that Louisiana residents think Bush did a better job handling Katrina than Obama is doing with the oil leak. 35% approve of the job BO is doing with the oil mess, and 50% approve of the job W did with the Katrina mess.

I guess I was kinda surprised!

It doesn't surprise me in the least. The political BS of Katrina and the flooding, was just that, political BS.  It's kind of interesting to compare the death of the Louisiana marshes from 'flooding' by dirty oil with the tragedy of the flooding of New Orleans by the waters of the sea because man-made, gov't engineered/approved, levies failed.

In the first instance, we couldn't really warn the shellfish and shrimp and baby fish, etc... of the marshes that oil was headed their way, so you better leave -- but we full well knew it was going to happen if every single effort was not made to prevent it.

In the second instance, the residents of New Orleans were warned of a hurricane and advised to 'leave', many did not, the levies broke, and it was 'not' something that could be clearly foreseen.

    That's interesting.

But isn't it sad that with our "Experience" with Katrina which was 5 years ago apparently we didn't learn how to deal with Crisis.  And by WE I mean the Federal Government.

Any suggestions on what Obama could have done or what he can do now?

    I totally agree, Mike!

Not only was it not learned how to deal with a crisis, it was not learned how not to create one.  Both could have been prevented!!!!!

The thing that is not impressive AT ALL about either administration is that steps and measures were not taken and in place that could have easily averted both disasters!!!  Never mind that they bungled the aftermath.  They allowed the situations that led to both these disasters in the first place!!!   Neither has anything to be proud of.

I need to find out who planned the city of New Orleans. Brilliant to build a city below sea level, near the sea, in a major hurricane path!

Yeah and then not maintain the levees - BRILLIANT!!!
We have a city below sea level here in B.C.  Richmond - the maintenance of the dikes is a top priority.  Holland hasn't washed away either.  It's not like the technology hasn't existed for decades!  It is also interesting that the Canadian Government got it's teams in place in New Orleans before the Americans did.  It also peeves me that repeated offers to help in the Gulf with the oil spill have been turned down!  It's not like we don't know oil up here - 75% of America's oil comes from Canada.
Makes me feel angry, makes me feel sad.  It is interesting to me that citizens from different countries can pull together but their leaders get into pissing contests!

And even more brilliant is to rebuild that below-sea-level city after being drowned out!  Our tax $ at work - they could re-build 50 times and not seem to learn it isn't a real bright idea to build there.

I don't understand why we (the US) won't take all the outside help that's been offered, either. It makes no sense!

Of course it makes sense. That wouldn't put dollars in the pockets of Union bosses.

Some of it is Federal Law. Set in the 20's.

Taking outside help does 2 things.

      1.  It exposes the TRUTH through the foreign press.
      2.  It exposes the Federal Government as a bunch of bafoons who don't have any idea how to deal with this mess.  It makes them look stupid and weak... which they are... but they certainly don't want that in print.

Does anybody know how to deal with the mess now that it's occurred due to lax regulation and preventive steps before it occurred. Sex and drugs in the Interior Dept under Bush didn't do much to prevent the disaster. One more bucket of shit handed to Obama by Bush.

Salazar is from the same bucket, and so was Birnbaum.  I have a couple links to congressional letters to Salazar on one of my hubs, I'll copy the links to this forum topic tomorrow, and those letters do make it clear that there were known safety issues that were flat out not investigated properly by Salazar -- with the Atlantis in particular, an even deeper 'hole'.  It is so past the point of blaming Bush, that song and dance won't even skip.

Both of these links were found in another hub of a brand new hubber with all of '2' hubs, but proved quite alarming, telling, informative, as to the real back story of this spill.

            Feb 2010, Before the Spill:

            http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/Gri … %20ltr.pdf

            May 2010, After the Spill:

            http://grijalva.house.gov/uploads/Grija … atures.pdf

And we can only imagine what other correspondence there is that clearly shows issues of safety that were ignored..........

I read one article a few days back, and yes it had a liberal defensive bent, and the point of the article was to say that all those countries wanted to charge us for their help, and that was somehow unconscionable to the federal government as we had helped those countries with 'free' aid in the past.  It was rather childish, not to mention illogical, as BP clearly would have paid the bill.

Ahh, the BP oil spill. It would never have happened had intentional disregard for the procedures of drilling deep wells did not occur. But it did occur. This was a situation fueled by greed and greed alone, and thus should hold some severe criminal charges against the yay hoo's who cut the corners to begin with.
The help we turned down by foreign sources was purely a means to keep the truth from us the American people. A criminal investigation should be conducted and people regardless of their status in society or their level of wealth should be thrown into jail until they rot! They have a memorandum out from before the blow out where the higher ups in BP were told there would be a blow out and that it wasn't a maybe, it was a fact if they cut the corners they were being told to cut, there absolutely would be a blow out, and they did it anyways. Wake up folks this will never stop, never! Unless we stop bending over and letting it happen.
